…with… the unwritten rules

In our latest episode of the After Dinner Leadership Podcast, Inspiring guest Helen Appleby shared some insights from her book “The Unwritten Rules of Women’s Leadership”. She shared her views and opinions on how the 'rules of the game' can change, and how there is both visible and invisible work. Unwritten Rules can be confusing and misleading. It is important that we strive to bring clarity around the ways we work across teams and ensure everyone is set up to succeed rather than to fail. Clarity is essential in navigating through the workplace, especially as an aspiring leader.

How can we remove presumptions in the workplace, and increase clarity?

You can hear more of Helen's thoughts by listening to Episode 44 of our podcast, link in bio.

…with…seeking feedback

Feedback can bring awareness. When we ask for feedback we are seeking to be made more aware; when we have increased awareness we can then address ways in which we can improve and progress. When we receive feedback it is our responsibility to listen intently to what we are being made aware of, and treat the feedback with respect. Oftentimes, if we somewhat disagree with what is being said, we shut down the feedback immediately. Perhaps we need to ask some clarifying questions to fully understand what or why the feedback is being shared, but we should treat it with respect.
When we are giving feedback it’s important to be constructive and offer it in a way that is motivating rather than demoralising. In recent workshops we have used the word “feedforward” as a way to promote a healthy culture around the giving and receiving of feedback.

Consider how you can be more forward thinking in the ways you receive and give feedback.

…with… offering genuine support

Being genuine is a key to opening the door blocking honesty, vulnerability and often times, truth. When we offer genuine support, we are not only showing that we care, but that we're bought into the success of the project/task. More importantly, when we work collaboratively and offer genuine support we are showing our colleagues that we want THEM to succeed. There is no ulterior motive behind offering genuine support; our actions are not to seek self gain or appraisal for our support, rather it is performed with completely pure intentions.

…with… forward thinking

Mistakes are inevitable, and part of the learning journey. The way we deal with these mistakes, however, can dramatically change our trajectory of progress. If we dwell on past mistakes we may limit our mind and cap our progress. Adapting a forgiving, positive attitude can allow progress in both ourselves and those around us. This may require constant, intentional action by not allowing ourselves to be trapped in our own opinions and decision-making, instead being open to feedback and the progress this can bring.

As we influence and lead others we may focus on how to give feedback, but equally important is our responsibility in how we perceive and receive feedback as part of our development. The attitude with which we choose to receive feedback can either inhibit or enable our progression.

Think forward, not backward.

…with… gratitude

The practice of giving thanks is so important. As we genuinely thank others for the things that they do, our relationships will both grow deeper and add more value to our lives.

Developing a gratitude strategy can help keep our mindsets on positivity and all the good around us. This is especially needed in a world where negative news stories sell more than positive ones.

The science points to the fact that receiving gratitude has significant positive effects on our mental and physical health; this is a step beyond making a 'gratitude list' of things we are thankful for.

The takeaway: Thank others & recall other people’s genuine gratitude towards you.
