Nowaday's researching your family tree can be easily done online but there are a few stumbling blocks along the way.and if you follow the wrong route can be very expensive.
the following steps are a guide to get you started
1. find out all you can from your older relatives some may be just hearsay but write it down anyway.
2. you should be able to form a tree with your parents, grand parents and possibly your great grandparents.
3. Aim to get back to 1939 from this you may be able to go online to find them on the 1939 census. before parting with any money join Ancestry, find my past etc. on their free trials but remember to cancel subscriptions prior to end of trial.
4. Try using the free website Familysearch.org.
5. the GRO have free access to look up births 1838-1919 so by using this you can find siblings and mothers maiden names.

These are just a few tips to get you started if you come across a problem or would like further help please feel free to message me.

Family history is fascinating and very addictive, to get to know your ancestors best it is worth taking to time to try to do the family tree yourself but I know that can be a struggle. and sometimes a helping hand is needed. So if you are stuck or do not know where or how to begin then please message me

I have been busy sorting out my DNA results, Because I started researching many many years ago when you visited record offices and looked through pages and pages of baptisms, marriages and burials most of my tree was complete. It was good however to confirm via DNA that it is correct. plus managed to find lots of 2nd/3rd cousins.
It is a good idea to have a parent do their dna too if possible as it helps to find out which matches connect to the different sides of the family.

It's been a while mainly due to my working on my DNA results, it takes a while to get your head around all the matches they arise. One of the great benefits is the confirmation of all the previous research.
I am old school and prefer to research via parish records, gro and certificates. but I must admit i felt really good being able to share my research with other people who have linked with my Dna.
It can be mind blowing trying to link all the matches my advice would be take it one step at a time and double check everything. sometimes the link maybe a different generation to what you first think.
now waiting for the results of my mum's DNA as that will help sort out the maternal line.
Happy Easter everyone

I have been busy developing some trees, there's a lot more to family history than just names births, marriages and deaths,
You get a wonderful connection when you visit the places where they lived. a couple of weeks ago we visited Waltham Abbey where my maternal family are from and it was fantstic to walk through the streets imagining what it was like.

Life can be so strange and photo's can say so much, as a child growing up with 3 siblings all with darker hair and brown eyes I felt different as I was the fair haired and blue eyed. then when I was 15 my younger brother was born with blue eyes. (my dad had blue eyes too). roll on 43 yrs and I have a photo of my dad when he was young and I can definately see my son in him. looks like I have the paternal genes. which may explain why I love the water and boats as they were bargemen

It's important to talk about your family with the older generations as it's often during these conversations that you find out little snippets that can often amaze you. I was fortunate to have been told of my fathers paternal grandfather having been a mosaic worker at St Pauls, and his maternal grandfather was awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by king George V1.
This sort of information doesn't come up when you do searches on the internet at the moment so it's important to investigate any family stories and pass them down so they do not get lost in history.
