I'm excited to see a world leader taking a stand against popular trends in a bid to protect humanity.
Pope Leo wants to see humankind safeguarded and is calling for comprehensive regulations to govern artificial intelligence (AI).
It’s something I have felt was needed since AI was first introduced.
Don’t get me wrong. As a Social Media manager, business blogger and SEO/GEO content creator, I can see many advantages to people using AI like saving time by automating repetitive tasks; translating languages and quick data analysis.
But I can also see the disadvantages, like replacing humans in work; AI regurgitating human’s original thoughts and it lacks human emotions and judgement.
I firmly believe the UK government needs to start applying a higher tax to AI developers now, so they have finance available when masses of people start losing their jobs and claiming benefits.
There should also be strict regulations on all creative work stating whether it was produced solely by a person or with the assistance of AI.
I predicted a while ago that “lost” masterpieces by authors, painters and composers will start being found in attics and I think this has already started.
In my opinion, AI should not be allowed to think independently and take action without human consent, nor be permitted to kill people (but sadly AI is already being used in warfare).
Elon Musk expressed his concerns about a “Terminator”-like AI apocalypse in August 2021, some of which I share.
More people need to speak up about their concerns about AI (while we still have chance to control it), instead of the excitement about it saving time and making money for businesses.
The EU AI Act which officially entered into force on 1 August 2024, covers many of my concerns.
Some rules are already active, but some are still being discussed (sadly, it may be too late).
There will always be people (and governments) who appear to agree to abide by the rules but do things their own way.
I’d be interested to know your opinion on this in the comments below.
