Be part of something good…
I am pleased to share my backing for Conisbrough’s bid to be the UK’s first Town of Culture.
Conisbrough has played a remarkable role in our national story for generations. From inspiring Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe, to its proud mining heritage, to the iconic 12th-century Conisbrough Castle.
The bid seeks to celebrate the town's medieval history, industrial pioneering, its contribution to national defence, and the creativity and resilience that continues to shape its thriving community.

The bid builds on a series of successful community led cultural projects and aims to boost local economic growth and widen access to the arts.
Conisbrough has a strong track record of delivering standout cultural events, including Conisbrough Music Fest, Poppies at the Castle, Tour de Yorkshire and the Queens Jubilee celebrations - all led by local community volunteers.
If shortlisted, Conisbrough will receive £60,000 in development funding to finalise its vision. This competition is part of Labour’s commitment to championing local communities, reviving high streets, and celebrating the UK’s national story.
🏆 Winner: Named UK Town of Culture 2028 with a £3 million prize
🥈 Finalists: Two runners-up will receive £250,000
