🌍 Let’s talk about networking.

One of the things I love about the North East is just how many different events there are. Big breakfasts, small meet-ups, formal evenings, casual coffees with each having its own vibe.

But here’s something I’ve noticed this year:
Too many people are turning up to sell. And it shows.

You can see the pressure behind the smile. The need to justify the time out of the office.
It’s understandable… but it’s also backwards.

Because networking isn’t about closing the deal in the room.
It’s about the ripple you leave behind.

I’ll never forget a conversation I had with Michael Knowles (worth following if you want straight-talking SEO guidance). I told him I wanted to land a few clients through networking.
His reply stopped me in my tracks:
👉 “When you walk into a room, are you thinking about who you can help?”

Game changer.

Now, I don’t walk in looking for prospects. I look for opportunities to connect people. To add value. To be remembered for the right reasons.

Because no one turns up wanting to be sold to.
They turn up wanting connection.
And yes, eventually, maybe a supplier, but only when they trust you.

That’s why I see networking as marketing.
For some people, it’s the first and only time they’ll meet you in person. For others, it’s the reassurance they need that you’re the same person offline as you are online.

Some clients want to spend time in your orbit before they ever hand over that big contract.

👉 With Winter around the corner, I’m already eyeing up the events I want to attend. The ones that feel valuable, not just busy. The ones filled with genuine people who believe long-term trust always beats short-term wins.
