Swallows traditionally nest inside buildings, which can create challenges when those structures are due for demolition or redevelopment. In some cases, this has even led to costly replacement buildings being constructed purely to satisfy planning requirements.

To provide a practical alternative, Eco-Scope has been trialling a new type of swallow nest box since 2021. After a few seasons, we are now seeing positive results, with birds beginning to make use of the boxes.

Nature often takes time to adapt to new features, but patience pays off. With proven uptake, we are moving on to stage two of the project.

Not just dinner.

The European Lobster is a keystone species on our rocky North Wales coastline — vital for biodiversity and the local marine economy.

We don’t often get to survey underwater habitats directly, but marine species like this are still considered when looking at coastal development and conservation projects.

Should we be doing more to protect marine biodiversity along our coast?
We’d love to hear your thoughts — especially from those working in fisheries, coastal development, or marine conservation.

Nature on the verge — quite literally.
Common spotted orchids (Dactylorhiza fuchsii) are one of the highlights of summer roadside verges and meadows across North Wales.

They thrive in low-nutrient grasslands, which are increasingly rare. As ecologists, we record their presence as part of PEAs and habitat condition assessments — sometimes they turn up in surprising places.

💬 Where’s the most unexpected place you’ve seen orchids growing wild?

Tag us in your orchid finds — we’d love to see them.

The UK’s only venomous mammal? Meet the water shrew (Neomys fodiens).

This elusive, semi-aquatic species lives along ditches, streams, and wet meadows - and it packs a surprising punch for its size.

At Eco-Scope, we sometimes encounter these tiny predators during wetland surveys or habitat assessments in North Wales. Their presence can indicate healthy invertebrate populations and good water quality.

💬 Have you ever seen a water shrew in the wild? Or did you even know we had venomous mammals in the UK?

Tell us below - and let us know what species you'd like to see featured next.

Nature can return to even the most unlikely places.

This restored landfill site in North Wales is now home to wild chamomile and pollinators - and, thanks to a new project on Anglesey, we’re also protecting an area of peatland fen with NRW support.

Peatlands lock carbon in the soil, reduce flooding, and support rare species.

Eco-Scope works with landfill operators to improve biodiversity and build climate resilience across North Wales and beyond.

No hanging around at Eco-Scope - just a quick climbing inspection before morning coffee.

Here we’re assessing a mature tree for bat roost potential ahead of scheduled felling on an affordable housing development site.

Climbing inspections are a vital part of the bat survey process, helping us safely assess cavities and features that can’t be seen from the ground.

Some of the most valuable habitats in our landscape are also the most overlooked.

Roadside verges can support declining species like the butterfly orchid, pictured here by our Managing Director, Stuart.

Eco-Scope’s highways and ecology teams provide management plans to protect and enhance these spaces, working across North Wales and the UK.

Good verge management supports biodiversity, pollinators, and ecological resilience.

The role of an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) is something many construction teams will encounter - especially when working under planning conditions that involve protected species or habitats.

An ECoW’s job is to ensure the ecological side of things is handled properly during site works. That includes checking for active nests or bat roosts, supervising sensitive clearance work, and briefing contractors so everyone knows what can and can’t happen.

It’s not about stopping work - it’s about keeping things compliant and avoiding delays further down the line.

At Eco-Scope, our ECoWs work directly with site managers and contractors, giving clear guidance on ecological issues and helping projects move forward without risk of legal complications.

If your site has planning conditions that include ecology, this is probably something you need in place before

A closer look at a water shrew — the only UK mammal with a venomous bite.

These elusive insectivores are typically found near wetlands, streams, and damp grasslands, where they feed on invertebrates and even small amphibians.

Rarely seen up close, this individual was recorded during routine survey work by one of our ecologists.

Industrial wasteland or unexpected wildlife haven?

This former factory provides the perfect environment for a peregrine falcon — high ledges, low disturbance, and clear sightlines for hunting.

Sites like this are often overlooked, but they can play a surprising role in supporting protected species. At Eco-Scope, we assess all environments with fresh eyes — not just green ones.

Cornfield annuals in bloom on one of our project sites — adding a burst of colour and supporting a wide range of pollinating insects.

These species-rich areas are more than just visually striking. They provide essential nectar and pollen resources, particularly in landscapes where natural foraging opportunities are limited.

As part of our wider consultancy work, Eco-Scope also designs and delivers practical habitat creation schemes to support biodiversity on and around development sites.

A small reminder of the wildlife on our doorstep — an empty heron egg found by our Managing Director, Stuart, during a lunchtime walk near the Eco-Scope office.

Herons typically nest high in trees near wetlands or rivers. Once the chicks hatch, the empty eggshells are often dropped from the nest and left behind as quiet signs of seasonal change.

Encouraging biodiversity awareness isn’t just part of our work — it’s part of how we see the world, even on our lunch breaks.
