Having lived on both sides of the Atlantic I know that there are a number of words that are pronounced differently in the US, and the UK - and sometimes I have trouble remembering which is which...

Fortunately I have a secret weapon to help me, which I am going to share with you now.

This resource is also a wonderful help when I need to know how to pronounce foreign words (very common when recording an audio tour for an exotic place in another country for example), or medical terms which can be quite the tongue-twister.

My go-to place for pronunciation guidance is Forvo dot com.

Forvo is a huge database of pronunciations of common words, place names, and people's names, in dozens and dozens of languages. The pronunciations have been recorded by native speakers - and in the case of English there are the UK and US variants - thank goodness!

I can highly recommend the site - there is also a section on useful phrases if you are travelling to another country, which you can download as an app.

When I receive a script with lots of foreign words, I am always delighted when the client also includes a pronunciation guide that they have recorded for me, but when they don't, Forvo is a great back up.
