💧 THE UK’S DROUGHT SITUATION: EVERY LITRE MATTERS 🔥🚒

As highlighted in 3FFF Limited’s article “A Vital tool For The UK Fire and Rescue Services” published in the September 2025 edition of International Fire Fighter magazine, and our recent article, “High Temperature Alert – Where Has Our Water Gone?”, published in UK Fire magazine this month (August 2026), this is not a new concern for the fire industry it is an ever-growing challenge that requires greater attention and action.

Water availability, water security and the ability of Fire & Rescue Services to access the substantial volumes required for firefighting have been growing concerns for some time. As drought conditions continue to place increasing pressure on the UK’s water resources, the need to address these challenges is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Water availability, security and the ability of Fire & Rescue Services to access the volumes required for firefighting are issues that have been developing for some time and, as drought conditions continue to place pressure on the UK’s water resources, are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

The government itself recognises the importance of this issue. Environment Agency drought guidance specifically identifies that Fire & Rescue Services must have access to water for firefighting, particularly during periods of prolonged dry weather when water is scarcer and wildfire risk is significantly greater. It also states that water companies should have specific plans with Fire & Rescue Services to help ensure water is available for firefighting purposes during drought conditions.

The latest drought updates make one thing increasingly clear: our water resources cannot be taken for granted.

While rainfall may provide temporary relief in some areas, the prolonged dry conditions experienced since last year have demonstrated just how vulnerable reservoirs, rivers and groundwater supplies can become. In 2025, England experienced its driest spring since 1893, followed by its hottest summer on record, with nearly 9 million people covered by hosepipe bans and 996 wildfires attended by Fire & Rescue Services in England and Wales by early September.

For households, water shortages can mean restrictions and increasing pressure on already stretched budgets. But for the Fire & Rescue Services, it raises another critical operational challenge:
How do we continue to protect life, property and communities when major incidents can require hundreds of thousands of litres of water?

🔥 Wildfires in 2026: Are We Seeing a Pattern for the Future?

Wildfires across the UK and Europe this year are stirring important conversations not only about why fires are becoming more frequent and severe, but about what we should expect in the years ahead.

🔥 WHEN THE FIRE IS OUT, THE JOB ISN’T OVER

Woodland and wildfire incidents place an enormous demand on firefighting resources. Extinguishing the visible flames is only one part of the operation.

Once a fire is declared under control, crews may still need to remain on scene for hours sometimes considerably longer checking the ground, identifying hidden heat sources and damping down hotspots that could reignite vegetation and develop into a secondary fire.

🌲 Why are hotspots such a concern?

Heat can remain trapped beneath vegetation, within roots, peat, leaf litter and other organic material. Even when there are no visible flames, these areas can retain sufficient heat to reignite when exposed to oxygen, wind or changing conditions.

This means additional firefighter time, water, vehicles, personnel and equipment all resources that are already under significant pressure during major wildfire incidents.

🔥 The Science Behind Wildfires: Why Fire Travels Uphill

Understanding fire behaviour is critical to successful wildfire suppression.

Did you know fire naturally travels uphill?

As flames rise, heat is transferred by radiation and convection, preheating vegetation above. This reduces fuel moisture and allows it to ignite more rapidly. The steeper the slope, the faster the process, often resulting in greater fire spread and flame intensity.

This is why wildfire tactics are rarely as simple as attacking the fire head-on.

Incident Commanders may establish fire breaks ahead of an advancing fire, removing available fuel. In extreme conditions, firefighters may also use controlled backburning, deliberately consuming vegetation between the wildfire and the assets being protected. While counterintuitive, using fire to stop fire can be an effective tactic when carefully planned and conditions allow.

🔥 WHEN A VEHICLE FIRE BECOMES A WILDFIRE
A vehicle fire on the A31 near Ringwood is a stark reminder of how quickly a roadside fire can transition into a much larger vegetation fire.
Reports indicate the fire spread from a burning lorry into the central reservation before reaching surrounding New Forest heathland, requiring a major emergency response.

🔥 THE FIRE PATHWAY
A fully involved vehicle can produce intense radiant heat, flames and hot gases from burning plastics, rubber, upholstery, fuels, oils and other synthetic materials.
That heat can ignite nearby vegetation without direct flame contact:
🚗 Vehicle fire → 🌿 Central reservation → 🌾 Dry vegetation → 🌲 Heathland/woodland

The central reservation can become both the critical fuel bridge and a vital fire break depending on the conditions.
When vegetation is very dry, heating can cause pyrolysis, releasing combustible gases that can ignite. Wind can then accelerate fire spread by preheating fuels, bending flames into unburned vegetation, carrying embers and increasing oxygen supply.
This is why the visible flame front isn't always the most important place to attack. Fire can move through a chain of increasingly available fuels.
