Telling the story of FIXER • Katie Warren • Tourism & Policy • STR Management from its very humble beginnings and the original vision behind the business, through the challenges of growth, to building a company that can operate successfully beyond its founder.

This talk is an open look at the realities of creating and growing a small business: employing and managing people, developing as a leader, navigating the significant challenges of COVID, and undertaking a company restructure to create a stronger and more sustainable business. Growth into different avenues, offering more desirable services to serve existing clients as well as attract new, never jeopardising the excellent reputation which the business relies on.

A key part of this journey has been recognising the importance of stepping back. Building and empowering a strong management team has allowed greater freedom from the day-to-day operation of the company and created the space to focus on its future and how to future-proof its operations.

Alongside the growth of Fixer has come a much deeper understanding of Cornwall’s tourism industry, particularly the holiday-let sector. The experience of COVID highlighted the significant gap that can exist between the realities of working within tourism and the way the industry is portrayed in the media and public debate. It also brought some of the most challenging personal criticism of the journey so far.

That experience became a catalyst for greater research, understanding and advocacy — challenging misconceptions and speaking up for the small businesses and individuals whose livelihoods depend, directly or indirectly, on Cornwall’s visitor economy.

From starting a business, to learning how to lead it, stepping back from it, and finding a voice beyond it - where has the journey led me and what will happen next?

Knowing When to Push, When to Adapt and Why Success Doesn't Always Look Like the Summit 🏔️

At our next event guest speaker Chris Linnitt shares the story of rebuilding his life following a devastating motorcycle accident, 32 operations and the eventual amputation of his left leg.

From building a law firm to running marathons, completing endurance challenges and climbing some of the world's most demanding mountains, Chris has repeatedly tested what resilience really means.

His most recent attempt on Mont Blanc forced him to confront a different question: when does determination become stubbornness?

After climbing through the Grand Couloir and reaching 4,350 metres, Chris made the decision to stop short of the summit.

Through humour, vulnerability and some extraordinary experiences, Chris explores resilience, leadership, ego, decision-making and why sometimes the bravest thing you can do is change the plan — and take one more step in a different direction.
