Using shared immersive technology to deliver narrative gaming experiences at Sheffield DocFest 🎮

Sheffield DocFest Alternate Realities is the festival's dedicated strand for immersive and interactive non-fiction.

This year’s competition, which is designed in collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University and the British Council, saw teams compete to build narrative-driven immersive gaming experiences, which were then showcased to judges from inside an Igloo immersive space.

Built by five teams selected from a global callout, with each travelling to Sheffield to build, test and deliver their gaming experiences over a 2.5-day period. Each one was unique, ranging from an immersive journey of a child lost in the Yorkshire Peaks to a 1970s ice cream van simulator.

How AtkinsRéalis uses Igloo immersive technology to safely accelerate nuclear decommissioning and reduce personnel exposure🏭

AtkinsRéalis is a long-term pioneer of Igloo spaces, with fascinating use cases such as the Virtual Site Access solution, which allows for the remote operation of nuclear sites, leading to a saving of over £1m in operational costs.

Now, that capability has been expanded with a new immersive environment at the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Collaboration (RAICo1) facility in West Cumbria, designed to make the planning and delivery of nuclear decommissioning safer and more effective.

This solution is expected to reduce the time spent in hazardous environments by up to 40%, using robotics and live data streaming to enable remote operations and monitoring.
