🚨 Another tragic reminder that work at height doesn't have to mean working high.

A warehouse supervisor tragically lost his life after falling just 1.5 metres from a mobile loading ramp during a container loading operation. Following its investigation, the HSE found that the risks had not been properly assessed, suitable controls were not in place, and safer alternatives that could have eliminated work at height had not been considered.
The company was subsequently fined ÂŁ425,000, with additional costs of over ÂŁ119,000.

This incident highlights some key principles of the Work at Height Regulations 2005:
✔️ Avoid work at height wherever reasonably practicable.
✔️ Properly plan and risk assess the activity.
✔️ Ensure equipment is suitable and used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
✔️ Protect everyone exposed to the risks—not just those carrying out the task.

Too often, organisations focus on preventing falls from significant heights, but serious and fatal injuries can occur from relatively low-level falls.

If your business carries out work at height or has employees accessing loading ramps, mezzanines, roofs, platforms or similar work areas, now is the time to review your arrangements.

🔥 Could workplace temperature limits soon become law?

Following this summer's extreme temperatures, the Government has asked the HSE to review how heat is managed in UK workplaces.

Current legislation requires employers to provide a reasonable indoor temperature and assess the risks associated with excessive heat. However, there is currently no legal maximum workplace temperature.

The review comes after growing calls from trade unions for clearer legal limits, with proposals including a maximum of 30°C for most indoor work and 27°C for strenuous activities. The British Safety Council has also called for updated regulations with practical trigger temperatures and proportionate control measures.

As climate change continues to increase the frequency of extreme heat, this could represent one of the most significant changes to workplace health and safety guidance in years.

Do you think the UK should introduce a legal maximum workplace temperature, or is a risk-based approach the better solution?

Another day, another fire risk assessment completed.

One of today’s findings was a reminder of why fire risk assessments should always be carried out by a competent person. Hazards aren’t always obvious, and identifying them requires the right knowledge, experience, and attention to detail.

Fire safety isn’t about ticking boxes—it’s about recognising risks before they become problems.
