As Su***de Prevention Week begins, thereβs one person in particular weβll be thinking about at Kerax Land.
Dean. π§‘
On 11th October 2022, we sadly lost Dean to su***de. He was just 20 years old.
Almost four years later, we still talk about Dean, still share the memories and still miss having him around. We donβt want Dean to be remembered for how we lost him, though. We want to remember the person he was and the time we had with him.
Dean joined Kerax with very little experience and, if weβre being fair, horticulture probably didnβt come completely naturally to him at first!
But what Dean did bring was something you canβt really teach.
He turned up every day with a smile on his face and ready to work.
Whatever task he was given, Dean just got on with it. There was no hesitation, no complaining and no trying to avoid the jobs nobody particularly fancied. He gave everything a go and did it with that same smile.
He quickly became one of the team.
When we look back at these photos, thatβs the Dean we remember. The smile, the laughs, the banter, the days at work and the nights out. All those ordinary moments that probably didnβt seem particularly important at the time, but mean so much more to us now.
Weβll always wish there could have been more memories to make.
Deanβs loss is also why Su***de Prevention Week means something very real to us.
If sharing his story encourages even one person to check in on a mate, to ask someone twice if theyβre really OK, or gives somebody who is struggling the courage to say βIβm not doing greatβ, then itβs worth sharing.
Look out for your mates, your workmates and the people you love. Sometimes someone can turn up, smile, get on with their day and you may never realise what theyβre dealing with inside.
And if youβre struggling yourself, please talk to someone. You donβt need to know exactly what to say. Starting the conversation is enough.
Sometimes it can begin with just a few words:
βMate, are you really OK?β
Dean, weβll keep talking about you, sharing the memories and remembering you with a smile.
Always one of us.
Always part of our team.
Never forgotten. π§‘
