That once you're big enough to have a "proper" HR department, then you take people management seriously.

What absolute tosh!

Redundancy is a legitimate reason to dismiss, but how the process is managed is so important. Get it wrong and you're looking at an unfair dismissal claim regardless of the business reason.

Here's what we see businesses mess up most often:

❌ Selecting people without proper, objective criteria
❌ Failing to consult — even when it feels awkward
❌ Not exploring suitable alternative roles
❌ Getting the notice and pay calculations wrong
❌ Moving too fast because they want it done

"We treat everyone like family here" oh dear...

Families don't have performance management processes. Families don't hold disciplinary hearings. Families let things slide because it's awkward. Then one day, something goes very wrong, and the business has no documentation, no process, and no leg to stand on. Sadly we see many businesses who hire friends and family, then end up in a tribunal because they've not followed the right processes.

You can care about your people and run a professional, well-managed business. The best employers tend to do both.
