A really interesting read about what our babies need

* Unfolding Movement Series - Part Three *

The play space sets the tone for what takes place during the play time.

What does the environment we provide, say to the child?

On the left, we have an infant laying with a play gym over him. Objects dangling in mid air at a height where he can bat them - perhaps unintentionally, and for the most part they are just out of his grasp. Imagine yourself in his position for a moment and see what he sees from this perspective.

On the right, we have an infant in a safe play space laying with a few objects close to him, should he choose to engage with them. He can attempt to roll, he can lay and rest, he can explore his hands, kick his legs, choose where his gaze rests or focusses.

We are lead to believe that our babies need stimulation, entertainment, activity. Hence the play gyms, bouncers, activity centres.

In reality, the young infant needs very little in terms of stimulation. What he needs is space and time to make his own choices, to show how capable he is.

For the infant, less truly is more.

The PCT have not commissioned any breastfeeding support services for the year 2012/2013, resulting in the closure of the Northampton Baby Cafe and the ending of the Mum to Mum Breastfeeding Support project. Northampton's Baby Cafe opened in 2004 and since then has helped 1,600 mothers. The Mum to Mum Breastfeeding support project has offered support to 5,585 mothers in it's first year.

These two services provide vital specialist help available to mothers who choose to breastfeed, and are real lifeline to them and their babies. Funding is needed to keep the Baby Cafe drop-in service open, and so that the Mum to Mum project can continue training peer supporters, providing up to date information and offer valuable support to new mothers and their babies.
