The inconvenient truth about working for yourself?

Nobody warns you it can be just as exhausting as the job you left.

I learned that the hard way: cut my income in half to build this business, thinking I was escaping burnout and still found myself working evenings just to keep up. It took actually building proper systems and support around myself to fix that, not just “being my own boss.”

“Just push through” is just delayed collapse.

I pushed through 12 hour days, 4 days a week, for 6 months before I broke completely. Signed off, burned out, depressed. Pushing through didn’t make me stronger, it just delayed the reckoning and made it worse.

If pushing through hasn’t worked yet, it’s not going to suddenly start. Something has to actually change.

No judgement, promise! We all have one and it sits there, unopened or half-read and every day it stays there it somehow gets harder to reply to.

I once had a superior ask me to do something then flat out deny he’d ever said it the second his own boss questioned him.

No accountability, no paper trail, nothing! I was left looking like I’d made the whole thing up, over a task he’d asked me to do himself.

I promised myself I’d never work like that.

So when I manage a client’s inbox, diary or tasks, everything is tracked and visible: what’s been actioned, what’s pending, what’s been agreed. No “he said, she said.”, no guessing what happened while you weren’t looking. When I make an error (Yes, I still make mistakes like every other human being!), I own it and never hide it.

This why when working with me, you always know what’s been done, because it’s documented not just remembered. That one bad superior taught me more about how to run a reliable service than any training ever did.

Yes, I can write and speak perfect English.

Still, some people would pretend they didn’t hear me, just because my accent didn’t sound “local” enough for them. Not mishear me BUT pretend and there’s a difference and I could always tell which one it was. I wouldn’t want to work with these people ever again and I’m glad I don’t have to anymore.

Another thing which gets on my nerves are business owners looking for a VA support with the condition of: being British, being native English speaker and similar. Honestly, this needs to stop.

I’ve lived in the UK long enough that I’ve stopped explaining myself over it. So let me just say this plainly: if you’re quietly worried my surname doesn’t sound British enough, you probably wouldn’t have heard me properly anyway.

That’s fine and I’m not trying to convince anyone who’s already decided. I would only ask you one question: how many languages can you speak? If it’s one, then you just rude judging me for speaking 2! Sorry not sorry.

For everyone else, the ones who care about the work getting done properly, not where I’m from, that’s exactly who I built this business for.

Why being available to clients 24/7 is overrated: because the ones who need you at 9pm on a Sunday are usually the ones who don’t respect your time in the first place.

I ended a client relationship after 3 months once, over exactly this. I said clearly: no meetings after 3pm. Got asked for a weekly 3:30pm call anyway, the very next Monday.

Boundaries stated once should be enough. Available 24/7 isn’t dedication but a lack of boundaries and you don’t want to play this game, trust me!

Yesterday marked my 1 year in The HoLT 🥳🎉

And honestly? Best decision I made for my business and myself!

Got some amazing clients out of this community but it’s not all about getting the clients but the resources, the masterclasses, the challenges - all of it has actually helped me run my business.

Confession though: I spent the first 10 months being a proper lurker, only reading everything, joining nothing, hiding in the background like a ninja 😅 Then I finally pushed myself to try speed networking in August (wasn’t nearly as scary as I built it up to be in my head btw) and started showing up to community calls. Wish I’d done that from day one!

Let me tell you one thing: you do not feel lonely in this community. Running a business on your own can be isolating, but this community has properly changed that for me.

My regrets? Not joining sooner and not getting stuck in sooner once I did!

So if you’re sat on the fence wondering whether to join The HoLT, why wait? I promise it’s worth it.
