Stress Free HR Ltd was born from a need to work more flexibly after having two children. I finally followed the advice of many friends and work colleagues and set up the business with the aim of supporting as many SME's as possible with their HR related work. I’m part of many fb groups. I saw this ad today and asked the original poster why he preferred a male.

His response was that all applicants were welcome, male and female but because of the situation with lifts and luggage, most women weren’t interested hence his “preference”.

He was a bit offended that I had challenged him as he stated he would categorically not discount a woman for the role.

If a woman applied and was rejected and had a screenshot of this advert, she could claim that this person had an unconscious bias that he would prefer a male over a female. His attempts to state the opposite would likely fail just from mentioning it in the post.

The original poster could have taken gender completely out of the ad by simply including that heavy lifting due to lugage and limited lifts would be required. That would then let men and women know that there was a strength requirement to the role without singling out a specific s*x.

Listen up business owners! There are people who make a living looking out for mistakes like these because they know you’d rather pay £1000 to settle than £20k defending a claim!

If you’re asking for something in an ad, ask yourself why you need it. If you can’t fully explain it, don’t include it especially if it’s a protected characteristic! (Age, s*x, gender, disibility etc).

Remember, to make a claim for discrimination, the individual doesn’t even have to be employed!

It's been so busy this year, this month has been no different! So much so that I missed posting yesterday that Stress Free HR Ltd turned 5!!!

Remember that a failure to demonstrate when requested that your employees have the right to work in the UK could land you a £20,000 fine per employee! Ouch!

Apparently today is “Blue Monday”…

Did you know it was coined by a psychologist in 2004 by a travel business to boost their winter packages after the Xmas period?

Today is no different to any other Monday.

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” was also coined by professor Kellog in the 1920’s and it’s something I hear A LOT when I tell people I live an intermittent fasting lifestyle and don’t eat breakfast.

Both of these are marketing tactics.

Perhaps I should start a HR one!

Redundancy has many stages to it, consultation has to be meaningful and you have to consider what your employees have to say.

This company owner clearly didn’t have a trusted HR person to give him advice…

It’s ok to make redundancies if your business needs it but you have to do it properly!
