July & August Tree Care – What Should You Be Doing?
Summer is an excellent time to assess the health and condition of your trees. While major pruning is often better left until autumn or winter for many species, there are still several important maintenance tasks that can help keep trees healthy, safe and looking their best.
During July and August, we recommend:
• Removing dead, dying or dangerous branches – Deadwood can fall without warning, particularly during summer storms or periods of strong wind.
• Crown lifting – Raising low branches can improve access over driveways, footpaths and gardens while maintaining the tree’s natural form.
• Light crown thinning (where appropriate) – Selective thinning can improve airflow through the canopy and reduce wind loading. This is not suitable for every tree and should always be carried out correctly.
• Monitoring for pests and diseases – Summer is when many issues become most obvious. Early identification can often prevent more serious problems developing.
• Removing epicormic growth – Many trees produce vigorous shoots from the trunk or main limbs during the growing season. Removing these can improve appearance and help direct the tree’s energy.
• Inspecting mature trees – Large trees should be checked periodically for signs of decay, structural defects or movement, particularly if they overhang buildings, roads or neighbouring properties.
If you’re unsure whether your trees require attention, we’re always happy to provide honest, professional advice.
