Nuclear AMRC has secured £1.3 million to develop and deliver state-of-the-art training equipment for the new Nuclear Skills Academy in Derby.

Due to open its doors this month, the academy, situated in the iHub, at Infinity Park, will train 200 apprentices a year for Rolls-Royce’s submarine propulsion business.

The cash injection from Innovate UK comes as both Nuclear AMRC and Rolls-Royce prepare to launch the academy to government stakeholders in Parliament on 14 September, as part of the Nuclear Industry Association’s Nuclear Week.

Andrew Storer, chief executive of the Nuclear AMRC, said: “There are significant skills shortages across the nuclear sector, and we urgently need to develop a new generation of skilled nuclear engineers to deliver the UK’s commitments for low-carbon power and national security.

“High-quality training needs high-quality equipment tailored to the needs of the industry, and this new funding from Innovate UK helps ensure that apprentices at the Nuclear Skills Academy will be able to develop their skills on state-of-the-art equipment for advanced manufacturing.”

River boat trips in Derby city centre have been launched for passengers by Derby and Sandiacre Canal Trust Ltd.

The Trust will run the service initially at weekends in their specially-built boat, the Outram. A schedule is being developed to match demand from the public.

The boat is a traditionally built steel hulled narrowboat measuring 50ft by 8ft 6in and designed to carry 12 passengers and crew. It will follow a fixed route between Phoenix Green, opposite Derby Museums‘ Museum of Making, and Darley Abbey. The trip takes about 50 minutes travelling slowly upriver, turning and returning downstream to the mooring point.

Mike Wingfield, Vice Chairman of DSCT and designer of the Outram, said: “We knew we had to design a boat from scratch and this allowed us to build it with disabled access and environmental credentials.

Elite cyclists could soon be in action on the streets of Derby as the city bids to host some of the UK’s leading road cycle races.

After submitting an expression of interest, Derby City Council has now been invited to bid to become a host city for the Cycle Race Tour Series, a leading event on the UK’s cycling calendar, from 2023 to 2025.

The city has also been invited to bid to host the Women’s Tour in 2023 and the Tour of Britain in 2024.

Councillor Jerry Pearce, the city council’s cabinet member for Streetpride, leisure and public spaces, said: “Derby is a city where anyone can get involved with cycling, whether they’re a beginner or an elite cyclist.

“The advantages of being a host city are tremendous, from raising our city’s profile and boosting our local economy to inspiring the next generation of cyclists.”

Tom Stanton, head of performance pathways for the GB Cycling Team, which is currently based at Derby Arena, said: “Derby continues to champion cycling for all ages and abilities and being a host city for these leading events would only be a positive addition to the cycling and wider communities.”

A partner at BB&J Commercial has raised more than £1,000 for specialist child exploitation charity Safe and Sound after completing a gruelling cycle challenge.

Mark Richardson, who is the charity’s chair of trustees, recently took part in a coast-to-coast challenge, from Seascale to Whitby, which saw him cover 150 miles in a single day.

Mark said: “As well as heading the board of trustees, who all bring professional skills to the table and raising awareness across our networks of the dangers facing children and young people in our local communities, I am glad that I have been able to put my love of cycling to good use and raise money for this great charity.

“People are still pledging money and I hope to hit my £1,500 target in the coming weeks.”

Derbyshire Institute of Sport has given its backing to a new talent academy designed to support futures sports stars.

A collaboration between DIS, South Derbyshire District Council and Active Nation, the South Derbyshire Talent Academy offers a support scheme aimed at encouraging sporting excellence.

The academy, which has 60 places available and is open to all age groups, will support talented sports people and children to realise their potential, whether it be at county, regional, national, or international level.

The district council is using funds from its former sports pass and grants scheme, which supported DIS-trained athletes para swimmers Lewis White and Megan Neave, and javelin thrower Bekah Walton, who recently retained her British javelin title.

Applications are invited to the scheme, which will offer an annual pass to Green Bank (Swadlincote) and Etwall Leisure Centres and a programme of workshops hosted by DIS’s world-class coaching team.
