If nothing changes this quarter, where does the next client actually come from?

Not the hopeful answer. The real one. Name the person or name the channel.

Most owners can answer that for the last client and not for the next one. That is not a planning failure. It is that the thing genuinely getting in the way is rarely the thing you would name if somebody asked, which makes it hard to see from the inside.

The quiz takes two minutes and tells you which pattern is stopping you. No call, no pitch at the end of it.

I tell clients to ask for help. It took me too long to do it myself.

Fifteen years self-employed and the instinct is still to work it out alone at eleven at night, rather than say the awkward sentence to somebody who could have answered it in ten minutes.

I brought Cham in as a sounding board, and the change was not the advice. It was having to say the thing out loud. Half of what I was stuck on turned out to be stuck only because it had never left my head.

Solo is a stage. It is not a strategy.

Who do you talk it through with?

There is a return due on Friday that you have not opened yet.

The first Making Tax Digital quarterly update lands on 7 August, for self-employed people and landlords whose 2024/25 qualifying income was over ยฃ50,000. Penalty points are waived this first year. It is still compulsory.

You will get it done. That part is not in question.

Here is the bit we would watch instead.

This week the admin has a deadline and a name attached to it. The follow-up you owe someone has neither. Nobody is chasing you for it. Nothing goes wrong on Friday if you skip it.

So it moves. And skipping it feels responsible rather than costly, because look what you were doing instead.

That is what makes a compliance week expensive. Not the hours it takes. The permission it hands you to put off the one job with no deadline and nobody waiting.

The warm lead who said 'catch me in August' does not know you are filing this week.

So do the return. Then send one message before you shut the laptop. One. It does not have to be a good one.

Which one would it be, if you sent it today?

And if the honest answer is that you would not send it at all, that is worth knowing. Two minutes tells you why: https://go.thesuccessacademy.co.uk/f2bfd9239

They said they were interested. Then it went quiet.

Do you follow up a third time, or do you take the hint?

Worth knowing what sits behind some of that silence at the moment. KPMG asked 3,000 UK consumers in June: 55% say they feel financially secure, and 60% think the economy is getting worse. Cautious, not skint. Those are two different things and they get treated as one.

Cautious people do not say no. They go quiet and they wait. Which means the silence you are reading as rejection is often a decision that has not been made yet, and the third follow-up is the one that happens to arrive when they are ready.

Still feels rude, though, doesn't it.

So which are you: third time, or take the hint? Interested in where people draw the line, because we have never agreed on it either.

A couple in Ashbourne are buying up town-centre buildings and leasing them back cheaply. An accountancy firm sponsored the cricket. Neither is a marketing tactic. Both are the same bet.

The bet is that being present in one specific place, repeatedly, for longer than feels comfortable, beats being visible everywhere for a fortnight. Chris and Andi Harvey opened Hopton Hall Gallery on St John Street in April. DJH put their name on Derbyshire county players and two boards. Neither of those will ever show up in a monthly report as a lead source, and both will do more than a boosted post.

Then the story that looks unrelated and is not. Around 62% of the links quoted inside Google's AI answers come from outside the top ten results. Page three can get quoted now, if what is on page three is plain and specific.

Same bet, different pitch. Show up in a place, say clearly what you do, keep doing it after it stops feeling new.

A fourteen day run of anything is a thing you protect.

That is the whole trick, and it is why fifteen minutes is enough.

Resolved gives you one client-getting action a day and a streak you can see. The actions have a floor: a Quick Win takes fifteen minutes or less, so a bad Tuesday still counts. You cannot fail a day. That matters more than it sounds, because what ends most good runs is not a failure, it is one missed day quietly turning into permission to stop.

Day fourteen is where it changes. By then you are not doing the action because an app told you to. You are doing it because you have become someone who does it, and you would rather not lose that.

It is ยฃ99, one off. Your 28 days start the day you start, not on a cohort's timetable. No videos to watch, no modules. One card, one action, one day.

Have a look: https://go.thesuccessacademy.co.uk/f6d20e1f0 ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐—ณ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ!

You said yes to the extra bit. Again. It took forty minutes and it was not on the invoice.

You are not alone in that, and the numbers are bigger than most people would guess. Simply Business asked 408 UK tradespeople: 92% get asked for work beyond the booking, 62% say yes regularly. That comes out at roughly 1.8 hours a week, about ยฃ2,600 a year.

Here is the bit that stopped us. 62% also said those favours led to recommendations.

So it is not a leak, exactly. It is a referral engine with nobody steering it. The question is not 'should I stop being generous', because you will not and you should not. It is 'which of these favours brings work back, and which one is just Thursday evening gone'.

Monday morning question: which favour last month actually turned into work?

Worth two minutes if you want to see where your own client flow leaks: https://go.thesuccessacademy.co.uk/fafc7f4ca

Meta has started charging UK advertisers 2% more to reach a UK audience.

Not a price rise on the ads themselves. A location fee on top, applied to spend delivered here, from the start of this month. Google has been running a version of the same thing since 2020.

On a small budget it is pennies. It is the direction that is worth noticing. The channel you rent your visibility from can change the rent, and you find out about it in a billing email.

So, honest question for the service owners here: is paid reach still worth it for you, or are you quietly done with it?

No wrong answer, and no pitch coming. Genuinely want to know what people are seeing this year.

When someone asks how you get new clients, what do you actually say out loud?

Not the version on your website. The pub test version. 'Word of mouth, mostly.' 'They just seem to find me.' 'Honestly, I'm not sure.'

We ask this often, and the honest answer is nearly always vaguer than the person expects it to be. Which is fine, and not a character flaw. It just means the thing bringing work in is not written down anywhere, so it cannot be leaned on in a quiet month.

'How do consultants actually get new clients' is one of the things people type into Google in this country. Nobody searches for that because they have it sorted.

So, what do you say out loud? Genuinely curious what comes out.
