"Always have a motto". That's my motto. Actually it isn't. But I've always loved a motto, especially a Latin one.
It probably comes from being a lifelong fan of Everton Football Club. Their motto, Nil Satis Nisi Optimum (nothing but the best is good enough), is as ironic as it is iconic these days.
In business, a good or serves as a concise and memorable statement that encapsulates the company's , , and . A good motto can help a company differentiate itself from competitors and connect with customers on an emotional level. Perhaps equally importantly, it can act as a single-line point of reference for employees - reminding them of what's important and why they're ultimately there. See Google's "Don't Be Evil" (now changed to "Do the right thing").
This weekend I set about thinking what the motto would be for my business. I started out armed with a general idea of what I wanted it to convey, a virtually non-existent grasp of Latin and (perhaps most importantly) an account with .
Here's what we came up with...."Crescit Personae, Crescit Negotium".
It translates to "As the person grows, so grows the business", and I think it works really well for business coaching.
Ultimately, what I do is a combination of and . I teach and give recommendations when that's going to help. But ultimately my role is to help the client to grow personally in order to grow their business. Then once they've got the business to a stage where it's less dependent on them, their role then becomes to grow their people to grow the business. It's pretty satisfying work!
Have you got a motto or a strapline? If so, what is it? And if not, what could it be?
Oh, and if it's not in Latin, why not!? 😄
