It's that time of year now that our 'wee' eight legged friends tend to visit our homes. I'm posting this today as I had TWO of these visitors last night and we tend to see a HUGE increase in calls during this month. Although a long post I hope it will go some way to assist you during Spider Season 🕷🕷🕷 ( post your spider pics below ) 😊😊🕷🕷

The giant house spider is one of our fastest invertebrates, running up to half a metre per second. This large, brown spider spins sheet-like cobwebs and pops up in the dark corners of houses, particularly in autumn. Chances are these guys have been in your house all along, hiding behind toilets, bath panels and dark corners. The Giant house spiders are particularly prevalent in the autumn when the males are out looking for females. The males stay with their chosen females for some weeks, mating numerous times until eventually they die, at which point they are eaten by their female. Giant house spiders spin sheet-like cobwebs in neglected corners of the room and wait close by for unsuspecting insects to get caught; they are most active at night. In terms of size, the giant house spider (UK) has been known to display a leg span of up to 120mm wide (which is about the diameter of a Compact Disc!). Female giant house spiders are larger than males, and can live for several years.

The best form of control for the giant house spider is literally down to hoovering all the little corners and dark places that we all tend to overlook when we run the hoover over the floor. Areas where curtains contact the floor, under laundry piles, under units, sofas, beds etc are all areas where these spiders will hang out. Keeping these areas hoovered and debris free will usually deter the spider as they like to feel safe. The good news is that the breeding season usually ends around mid October. You can remove them by placing a glass over them and sliding a piece of paper/cardboard under and releasing them, OR if you want to deter spiders, the easiest way is to mix peppermint oil and spray your home with this aroma. Also, place citrus fruit peel or similar smells in areas where they are frequently seen or known to hide. Eucalyptus is also a good alternative. ( PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT ESSENTIAL OILS CAN BE TOXIC TO PETS!!! )

Remember though that Spiders are nature's very own Pest Controllers and extremely beneficial within our eco-system so when possible Capture & Release 🙏😀😀🕷🕷

As always should anymore advice be required don't hesitate to contact me. 🕷🕷

This is a ground nest, attended to, by one of my Technicans last week.

Even though we are coming into October we are still receiving calls regarding wasps.

This is an example of a very dangerous and aggressive nest, and I'm quite aware that people would suggest leaving it alone, however, as you can see, this nest is quite near a housing estate and poses quite a significant risk to adults, children and pets.
Bear in mind that the vibration of people passing by, or kids playing football, could send these wasps into attack mode, and with possibly up to a 1000 wasps in a nest, and a single wasp being able to sting you several times then an attack could prove very dangerous.

Please, if you happen to see something like this then please don't hesitate to contact us. We would normally ask for a video of the area so that we can ascertain whether its a nest or feeding wasps.

Thanks for your time.

🚨 BEDBUGS ARE ON THE RISE: What You Need to Know 🚨

At North West Pest Control Ltd, we have seen a massive surge in bedbug calls recently. It’s not just hotels—we are treating outbreaks in Airbnbs, HMOs and family homes right across the region.

Bedbugs are expert hitchhikers. With holiday season in full swing, they are moving easily from travel accommodation straight into private homes.

Don't let them hitch a ride with you! Here is what you need to look out for and how to protect your home.

🔍 WHAT TO LOOK FOR:

* Tiny dark spots (f***l stains) on mattresses, headboards, and bedding.
* Small, pale yellow skins that the bugs shed as they grow.
* Live bugs—they are oval, reddish-brown, and about the size of an apple seed.
* Itchy, red bites, often appearing in clusters or a straight line on your skin.

✈️ TRAVEL PRECAUTIONS (While on Holiday):

* Check before you unpack: Do a quick 5-minute inspection of the bed seams and headboard before settling in.
* Keep luggage elevated: Avoid placing suitcases on the bed or carpet. Use the luggage rack or keep bags in the bathroom (bedbugs hate tiles!).
* Inspect your clothing: Don't leave clothes scattered on the floor or bed.

🏡 WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU GET HOME:

* Wash immediately: Launder all holiday clothes on a hot cycle (60°C) or tumble dry on high heat for at least 30 minutes to kill any hidden bugs or eggs.
* Vacuum your bags: Give your suitcases a thorough vacuuming and empty the canister safely into an outside bin.

If you suspect you've brought some unwanted guests home with you, don't panic and don't try to tackle it alone with DIY sprays—this often spreads them further.

These resilient pests are notoriously difficult to eradicate once established in a dwelling. Proactive detection and immediate professional intervention are crucial to controlling their spread. Understanding the signs of an infestation empowers individuals to seek timely assistance. Effective management requires specialised knowledge and treatment protocols to ensure complete elimination.

We fully understand that the psychological toll they create can be severe—causing sleepless nights, anxiety, and immense stress.

For businesses, a bedbug outbreak brings massive financial costs and devastating damage to your hard-earned reputation.
