What age did your littlun move to a ‘big bed’ and how did it go? ⬇️
It’s so tempting to move toddlers into a bed sooner than is ideal. Maybe they’re beginning to look a bit squished, or it’s now hurting your back getting them in and out, perhaps they rattle the bars, or perhaps somebody told you it would improve sleep. ⬇️
Many parents make this transition when their littluns are too young for it to likely work well. It does in some cases & that’s fab if that was the case for you. But more often, children under 2.5yrs aren’t cognitively able to understand the concept of ‘staying in bed’ so if they’re even half awake (before going to sleep at bedtime, or during slight wakefulness in the night) you may find them up and out of bed before even they know it. ⬇️
In most cases it’s best to try to keep them in their cot until as near to age 3 as possible, this is when the change will likely be the smoothest.
If you’ve already made this transition or are planning to do so soon though, then the following might help:
👧🏼 DON’T say “you mustn’t get out of bed/stop getting out of bed” etc. Until now, that’s never been an option for them, so unless you mention it.. it won’t necessarily occur to them that it’s an option now either.
👦🏻 Gate their doorway. So you’re essentially making their room into a big cot. Not only does this keep them safe but it means you can go to them and put them back to bed as quickly as poss.
🧒🏽 Give them some control and plan ahead. When the move first happens, let them choose their new bedding, talk about it beforehand, allow them some involvement in setting up their new room. Allowing them some decisions can reduce any potential battles over decisions that are yours.
Hope that helps if you’re considering this move, or have recently made it. Here to help if sleep is an issue in your family and you’re ready for that to change x
