The Ministry of Justice has announced that the Mediation Voucher scheme will be extended for another year. This is great news for families who are seeking to discuss and agree arrangements for their children in mediation.

The voucher provides £500 per case towards the cost of mediation, which can often make a real difference to whether parents are able to access mediation and benefit from the child-focused support of a mediator.

What happens in a family mediation session?

The starting point for any mediation case is for each of you to come to an individual meeting to talk to a mediator about your current situation. This meeting is confidential to allow you to speak freely about what has happened and any worries that you might have about coming to mediation.

Mediation allows both people to put forward issues that they would like to talk about and resolve, and to make suggestions about what could work well for everyone. The mediator will help you to find points of agreement and can make suggestions for working towards a solution.

Mediation isn’t about blame; it’s about building a workable plan for the future.
