A gasket that's 1mm out in the wrong dimension won't seal. Getting the measurement right before you order is the single most important step in the process.

Here's what you need:

Inner diameter (ID) — the bore of the gasket, which must match the pipe bore or fitting opening.
Outer diameter (OD) — the outside edge of the gasket. Must sit within the fl**ge face without overhang.
Thickness — determined by the fl**ge facing type and the compression range of your chosen material.
Bolt holes — measure the pitch circle diameter (PCD), the diameter of each bolt hole, and the number and spacing of holes.

The most common errors: measuring the gasket OD and treating it as the pipe size, or measuring a worn or compressed gasket without accounting for deformation. Always measure from undamaged reference surfaces where possible.

If you're unsure, our team can help interpret your measurements. Or send us the worn gasket and we'll digitise it for you.

PTFE doesn't behave like rubber. That's exactly why it belongs in certain applications.

Chemically inert, dimensionally stable, and resistant to virtually every aggressive medium — from concentrated acids to solvents to oxidising agents — PTFE gaskets go where rubber compounds fail. FDA-compliant grades are standard in pharmaceutical pipework, food-grade applications, and chemical processing lines where contamination is a disqualifying risk.

It also outperforms rubber in continuous high-temperature service, maintains its properties under steam, and won't swell or degrade on prolonged chemical exposure. If you're running CNAF or rubber in an aggressive media environment and seeing failures, PTFE should be the next conversation.

Gaskets Direct manufactures PTFE gaskets to your exact dimensions. Visit gaskets-direct.co.uk or call us on 01425 278011 for expert advice.

Temperature is one of the most common reasons a gasket fails prematurely — and one of the most avoidable.

The operating range of your material needs to comfortably exceed the peak temperature of your application, not just match it. Here's how the main materials stack up:

— Klinger CNAF — up to 400°C in steam, excellent for general high-temp industrial use
— Graphite — up to 450°C+, used in power generation, exhaust systems, and extreme-pressure steam
— Silicone — −60°C to +230°C, flexible and stable across a wide range
— Viton (FKM) — up to +200°C with high chemical resistance
— PTFE — up to +260°C, chemically inert at temperature

The right choice depends on your media, pressure, and whether temperature fluctuates or holds steady. If you're unsure which applies to your system, our team can advise on the correct specification.

The first custom gasket order is the only complicated one.

Once your specification is saved in the Gaskets Direct system — material, dimensions, tolerances — repeating the order is a matter of seconds. No re-entering dimensions. No re-specifying the material. No waiting for a quote from scratch.

For maintenance planners and procurement teams who order the same gasket specification on a regular cycle, this removes a recurring administrative overhead. The spec is right because it was right the first time, and that accuracy carries forward to every re-order.

No minimum order. Same turnaround. Same quality — every time.

Gasket failure is rarely random. When a seal keeps failing in the same joint, the first question to ask isn't "was it faulty?" — it's "was it compatible?"

Chemical incompatibility is one of the leading causes of gasket breakdown that gets misdiagnosed as a quality problem. Nitrile in a solvent environment. EPDM with oils. Rubber compounds in highly acidic media. Each will degrade — not immediately, but progressively — causing the seal to soften, swell, or lose its compression, well before the end of its expected service life.

The fix starts with matching the gasket material to the media it's actually sealing. Not just the media it was designed to handle, but the cleaning chemicals, temperature fluctuations, and pressure cycles it sees in real-world operation.

If you're replacing the same gasket repeatedly, the specification is worth reviewing. Our technical team can work through the compatibility question with you.

In chemical processing, gasket specification isn't a minor procurement decision. It's a safety-critical one.

The combination of aggressive media, elevated temperatures, and high-cycle pressures means that a gasket material selected without full compatibility data can fail — and when it does, the consequences extend well beyond a maintenance call-out.

Gaskets Direct supplies the materials that chemical processing engineers specify when the risk of failure is not acceptable: Viton for aggressive solvent and acid environments, PTFE for near-universal chemical resistance and FDA compliance, graphite for extreme-temperature and high-pressure service, and CNAF grades for general industrial and steam applications.

Machinery down. No spare. Distributor says two weeks. We've heard this before.

Gaskets Direct was built around exactly this scenario — the unplanned procurement requirement where a standard catalogue doesn't help and lead time is the only thing that matters.

Using the Gasket Builder at gaskets-direct.co.uk, you can design and submit a bespoke gasket specification in minutes: choose your shape, enter your dimensions, select your material, and get a quote straight to your inbox. Our UK manufacturing facility in Christchurch, Dorset handles production — no outsourcing, no waiting on a third party.

Same-day production is available for many specifications. If you're in a time-critical situation, call the team directly and we'll confirm lead time before you commit.

Gaskets Direct is an online platform. But it's not a startup.

Behind the Gasket Builder and the instant quoting tool is Delta Rubber Limited — a UK rubber manufacturer with over 110 years of combined team experience, ISO 9001 certification, and an in-house manufacturing facility in Christchurch, Dorset that produces custom rubber and gasket components every day.

That matters when you're ordering a bespoke component that has to perform in a live system. The technology is designed for convenience, but the manufacturing is backed by a depth of expertise that most online suppliers simply don't have. When you order through Gaskets Direct, a real technical team is involved in your specification — not just a fulfilment centre.

Most maintenance teams store gaskets the way they store bolts. The two aren't the same.

Rubber and elastomeric gaskets are sensitive to the conditions they're kept in — and incorrect storage can degrade a gasket before it ever enters service.

The key factors:

UV and ozone — the biggest cause of rubber degradation in storage. Direct sunlight and proximity to electrical equipment (which generates ozone) should both be avoided. Store in opaque, sealed packaging away from motors and generators.

Temperature— most rubber materials should be stored between 5°C and 25°C. Elevated ambient temperatures accelerate ageing even in unused stock.
Compression — gaskets stored under load or in a compressed state take a permanent set. They may appear undamaged but will no longer achieve the correct sealing compression when fitted.

Material matters — PTFE, CNAF, and graphite gaskets are far less sensitive than rubber. But even these should be kept dry and protected from physical damage.

If you're unsure about the shelf life of your current stock, our team can advise.

Motorsport Runs on Details — Including the Gaskets

In a high-performance engine, there's no such thing as a near-enough component.

Gaskets in motorsport applications face extreme temperatures, high pressures, and vibration levels that standard sealing solutions simply won't tolerate. The spec has to be exact.

We manufacture bespoke gaskets for automotive and motorsport applications:

✔ Custom-cut in Viton, silicone, and PTFE for high-temp environments
✔ CNC cut to exact dimensional tolerances — no die, no delay
✔ One-off prototypes or series production quantities
✔ Backed by 110+ years of combined materials experience

When performance margins are measured in fractions, the components behind the scenes have to be right.
