It’s 2023 and I hope you have exciting business goals this year?!

One thing I notice when speaking to my clients, is many of them skip one vital step when they’re making new plans for the year ahead…

They don’t always consider the impact that HR can have on reaching their goal. HR encompasses so much and it’s not just telling people off and occasionally firing them. Here are

• Helping your people develop their skills and grow professionally.
• Making sure everyone understands the importance of their role and what’s expected of them.
• Helping them to realise their value and taking care of their health and wellbeing.
• Making sure your business always adheres to employment law as well as the ACAS code of practice.
• Protecting both your people and your business from fines, criminal charges, and tribunals.

If you don’t spend enough time making sure you’re covering all your HR bases, your people aren’t going to thrive. And you certainly won’t be hitting those goals this year.

It’s not as tricky as it might sound though. To help you see what you need to do, I’ve written a new guide called: “The business owner’s 2023 HR checklist’.

I’d love to send you a copy, free of charge, to help you kick 2023 off in the right way.

The people working in your business are your greatest asset for your goals and achieving business success. So, why is it that so many business owners fail to create a ‘people plan' or 'HR strategy'? Here’s what it should include:

1. Specify the needs of your business
2. Look at the skills you have and the skills you need
3. Consider where outsourcing may be a good option
4. Identify appropriate training
5. Keeping your people happy

I support businesses with creating their HR Strategy/Roadmap to align with their organisational goals and I have written a Blog recently providing my top tips on strategising your people agenda - https://buff.ly/3wzPCGe

I think you’ll agree that a lot has changed with the way we do business since March 2020.

Covid-19 has been the biggest accelerator for workplace transformation that we’ve seen in decades. And surprisingly, it hasn’t all been bad.

Your people are likely enjoying greater flexibility in their roles and, in return, you may be seeing better productivity. You may even be saving money on travel and office space. It’s been eye opening.

But one thing that many businesses may have neglected to evolve is their company policies.

And this could potentially become a huge problem.

Because if your policies don’t reflect your current stance on an issue there’s real potential for employees to make claims, which could result in tribunals or payouts to affected staff. These can have a massive impact on a business.

If you haven’t reviewed your policies in the past year or so, it’s time to get to work.

For a short time, I’m offering local business owners a free HR Health Check. The idea of this is to help you to identify exactly where you need to make changes to your policies, and if you need to introduce any new policies to help protect your business from potential risk.

After a short introductory call, my experts will review any documents you share along with the information you give them, and then create a report of their findings. A second call will give you their feedback. Easy!

There’s no pressure to follow up on our recommendations, and certainly no obligation to buy anything from us. It’s just a good way for you to see what you might be missing, and for us to introduce ourselves.

You can book your free HR Health Check by visiting https://buff.ly/36zyiq5, or by giving us a call.

Two in five working parents plan to change jobs in the next 12 months, even if they’re satisfied in their current role. It’s all part of ‘The Great Resignation’ that is seeing people switch jobs more easily thanks to the availability of roles in the UK. If you want to retain your best people, it’s important you act now.

1. Invite open conversations about caring responsibilities
2. Make sure employees know what support is on offer
3. Provide flexible working where possible
4. Offer more than a competitive salary
5. Invite feedback to look for ways to improve

When you promote a member of your team internally, it’s a great achievement for everyone.

Your employee gets more responsibility, probably an increased salary, and they get more confirmation that they’re doing a great job.

You can see that you’re doing the right things to develop your people in the right way, and you can feel pretty confident that you’ve got the right person for the job, too.

And for everyone else, there’s a morale boost to see that internal promotions are happening, and you demonstrate that you value and reward effort.

Oh, and did I mention that you can save a lot of money on recruitment?!

But before you make that commitment to promoting a member of your team, do you know the considerations you need to make?

First, you need to assess your people’s performance. Obviously, those doing a better job over a longer period of time will be rewarded sooner. However, you also need to consider the seniority of those who are performing well, too. If you have two high performers, yet one is new and one has been with you for many years, you need to consider their knowledge of and commitment to your business as well.

Another thing you need to bear in mind for employees who’ve been with the business for any length of time is the time since their last promotion. Now, that doesn’t have to mean that they’ve been vertically promoted every year, but horizontal promotions - where a job title changes and salary is increased - can be just as effective at retaining your talent.

And of course, you also need to review what training, skills, qualifications, and ability they have for the role and the proposed role. Although it shouldn’t put you offlining someone up for promotion if they don’t yet have all the required skills - training someone up for a role can be relatively simple.

If you’d like a hand reviewing which members of your team are ready for promotion, or help up-skilling those you’d like to retain, we’d love to get involved. Just give us a call to see what we can do.
