Holidays. Those who work full time in the UK are entitled to take 28 days a year statutory minimum paid holiday. When I was employed, I took this for granted.

For the last 9 years, since I’ve been self employed - and advising my clients on the importance of making sure all their employees have the correct holiday entitlement - I’ve not been taking the same amount of time off that I would have taken if I’d had the entitlement of an employee - and this has most certainly been to the detriment of my health and well-being.

So, things are going to change - for the better. I’m currently on holiday - in beautiful Mallorca. My clients have known for several weeks that I’m away and my out of office message is on. They know what to do if urgent issues arise. The emails are still pouring into my inbox and the temptation is always there to respond - holiday or no holiday - and that’s what I do. My clients need me when they need me, so I must always reply straight away, wherever I am - right......????

Wrong. This year, things have changed. I lost my dad and haven’t really come to terms with it yet. This year, I’m going to do what I advise others to do and just be on holiday, spend time with my family, rest, relax and restore my wellbeing

As a mother of 4, with one child who’s already been there, one who hasn’t and won’t and two who will soon, I have a reasonable idea of what GCSE results day is like - full of competition, full of pressure, happiness sometimes, panic sometimes - not sure what to do next. As an HR professional of almost 30 years, I’ve learned that what employers want is the right attitude, a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn. Skills and knowledge can be taught, but attitude comes from within. Whatever today brings, there are options, there is a future, a positive future.

Fathers aren't taking advantage of the rules that allow them to share leave with their partners, according to research to mark the one year anniversary of the policy.
Why are so few dads taking up this option?

I have some sympathy with Sir Alan Sugar's view that we live in a speculative claims culture. If I was Stella English, I would go and hide somewhere quiet for a while and avoid making myself look any more greedy..........
