So proud of our team for doing such an incredible job on our site late last year! We hope to share with you all very soon about all of the finds and features from the site and what they tell us about the Iron Age and Early Roman communities in Sutton Valence.

Developers working on 110 new homes have unearthed rare Roman and Iron Age artefacts.

Big thanks to KAS and all the speakers for a great conference today! We look forward to the next one!

Thank you to everyone who attended our Archaeology Research Group's annual Fieldwork Conference today at Aylesford Priory.

We had c. 70 attendees listen to a number of excellent speakers with some very good questions following each session.

Technology willing, recordings from the day will be shared here and on the KAS website.

We will be busy planning 2026's conference for another region of Kent. We've so far done the Darenth Valley and now Thanet - where should we focus next?

We’ve started the week off by continuing our watching brief of the new pathway and fencing works around St Martins Battery in Dover. It was certainly not the nicest day to be exposed on the cliff, but we were joined by a friend who enjoyed the view with us regardless!

A rather chilly day today, continuing to monitor the works at St Martins Battery in Dover. Besides made ground in the area, nothing else has yet been found. We’ll be back monitoring next week as the new fence goes in!

We’re very pleased to be involved with this project, monitoring the groundwork’s in case of any buried heritage/archaeology. The finished pathway and fencing will allow much better access and safety to the site for everyone to enjoy, and the view is incredible!

New path at St Martin's Battery, Western Heights

Some of you may have noticed that there is work going on at The King Charles III England Coast Path, which currently passes along the front of St Martin's Battery.

The works, being delivered by Ovenden Allworks, will provide a widened surface path, providing enhanced accessibility for the public and year-round access. The new compacted stone surface being laid, together with new fencing, is part of a wider project to enhance accessibility at the Western Heights.

The creation of enhanced viewing areas will enable everyone to enjoy the expansive views across Dover Harbour, Dover Castle, and the English Channel.

This is being project managed by DDC working with partners. It’s being jointly funded by the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund and National Trails and should be completed by 22 November, weather permitting.
