Council for Kentish Archaeology

Council for Kentish Archaeology "Excavating, promoting and publishing archaeology throughout Kent". Founded in 1970 the Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit has excavated 400 sites throughout Kent.

The unit continues to excavate, record, publish and protect the rich history of Kent to this day. Two of the excavated archaeological sites are open to the public and are enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year, which are known as the Crofton Roman Villa, Orpington and the Roman Painted House in Dover.

Very sad to hear...

THE MUSEUM IS CLOSING!! Please don't scroll by!!! We need the help of our town, now more than ever! The Museum has been given notice to quit it's current home in The Forum Shopping Centre and will have to move by the end of November. The entire collection is at risk. It is understood that the unit has now been let to a commercial tenant, by the Forum owners, Vanguard Properties. The closure will also affect CSI: Sittingbourne . The Museum is a registered charity, run entirely by volunteers, and it's trustees are appealing for help among the towns residents and business community, to help us through this emergency situation. The Museum already rents off site container storage for some of it's collection, at great expense, but in the short term we need further storage solutions (container/warehouse/empty shop?). In the long term we are determined to carry on our research and community outreach activities, but we will only be able to do this if people come forward now to help in any way they can. Please get in touch if you think you can help and thank you to everyone, our members, visitors and volunteers, who have supported us so far, since our founding in the 1990s. If you think you can help please email - [email protected] or phone 07472 268388

We are very sorry to hear of the passing of Sir Robert Worcester who kindly allowed the KARU to excavate at Allington Castle for many years. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
