My fellow trustee's of Pushing Up the Daisies, Kate and Dietmar recently gave a fabulous presentation to medics, nursing and other staff at the teaching hospital, Ninewells, here in Dundee. They are also working closely with the Lead Clinician for Palliative Care at NHS Tayside and have been asked to give more presentations to local and national Palliative Care forums. Furthermore, Dietmar and I were invited and we gave a presentation to staff at the Maggie's charity centre here in Dundee.

So chuffed. I was asked to be trustee at the Pushing Up the Daisies charity and was appointed a couple of weeks ago. The three other trustee's, Kate, the co-founder, Dietmar and Tess are so passionate and supportive and I have a lot, to which to live up!

I had a fabulous meeting last week with a senior representative of the Islamic community in Dundee. We have agreed that we, through my my close association with Pushing Up the Daisies and End of Life Doula UK shall work at developing support for those planning for their death and dying.

Following the group that I facilitated on Saturday, I have decided to attend a two-day Mental Health First Aid Course at the end of July 2024. Although I am an experienced social worker and so very used to working with those with mental health issues, the meeting reminded me of the importance of refreshing my competence.

I attended a great Coversational Cafe (Death Cafe) with around twenty folk at Stirling Central Library last evening. This event was organised by Carol and El from the local End of Life Doula UK team and supported by the fabulous folk from Stirling Council to celebrate the Demystifying Death Week.

This will be an interesting program if your interested in how peace was come to in Northern Ireland and the role of Mi5 and Mi6 in establishing and maintaining ‘back channels’ which both Peter Taylor and Jonathan Powell have written a lot about. However what is more important to me about this programme is that the Mi5 officer Robert has decided to come clean about his actions because of the death of two of those with whom he was involved when negotiating with the IRA but, ' also following the death of his wife. Listening to this short clip it sounds to me that he probably will be recognising he is coming towards the end his own life and the importance of leaving a legacy and what I call the good, the bad and the ugly of our lives. Folk often see advance planning as the legal documents we have in place, Wills, Power of Attorney, Advance Directives to Refuse Treatment and CPR however, it is often far more than that!

The officer who helped bring peace to Northern Ireland tells the BBC he defied orders from the government.

As a former care manager who was responsible for planning care packages for folk such like Brian, I know that despite the best efforts of those trying to put a plan together they will be seriously hindered by manages who are trying to spend as little money as possible in supporting people and that even then, recruitment in social care is so problematic that providers are not able to provide the packages. Most people waiting for services don’t get the coverage that this case and the situation is a far worse than the one I was faced with twenty years ago when my job was to reduce bed blocking in hospitals. The new National Care Service (Scotland) Bill will compound things even further…in Mediation we don’t just talk with participants about cutting up the pie differently but about making the pie bigger!!

Brian Murphy has motor neurone disease and is stuck in hospital waiting for a care package.
