15 MINUTES IS NOT CARE.

We don't do rushed visits.
Minimum 2 hours. Always.

This is what 15-minute care looks like. ⏱️

Rush in. Rush out. No time for a chat. No time for a proper cuppa. No time to notice that Mum seems a bit quieter than yesterday.

We don’t do that at Bentleys.

We do a minimum of 2 hours.

Why? Because care isn’t just tasks. It’s company.

It’s having time to:
☕️ Make a proper pot of tea and actually drink it together
💬 Have a real chat, not small talk at the door
🍞 Make toast the way she likes it
👁️ Notice the small changes before they become a crisis

We call it “Company before crisis.”

It’s not faster care. It’s proper care. The way it should be in Dundee.

If your Mum or Dad in Dundee, Broughty Ferry, Monifieth, Barry Carnoustie, Birkhill and Muirhead is lonely, or you’re worried but don’t need “personal care” yet — this is for them.

“They’re just being lazy.” ?

But when dementia is involved, “lazy” usually isn’t the truth.

Here are 2 things that changed how I show up for the people I care for:

1. It’s not laziness. It’s Anosognosia.
Big word, simple meaning:
The part of the brain that notices something is wrong… is the part damaged by dementia.

So your mum genuinely doesn’t realise she can’t manage the bills anymore.
Your dad truly doesn’t see why getting dressed is suddenly so hard.

It’s not denial. It’s not stubborn. It’s brain damage.
When we get this, we stop asking “Why won’t you?”
And we start asking “How can I help you start?”

2. What looks like personality is often symptoms
Sitting all day = “lazy”
Not joining in = “doesn’t care”
Saying no to help = “being difficult”

But often it’s this:
The brain can’t figure out the first step.
It’s scared because the world doesn’t make sense.
It’s exhausted from trying to keep up in conversations.

It’s not who they chose to be. It’s what the disease is doing.

So what do we do instead?
Instead of: “Just do it”
Try: “Let’s do it together. I’ll help with the first bit.”

Instead of: “You already told me that”
Try: “Tell me more, I love that story”

We can’t cure dementia with our words.
But we CAN protect their dignity with them.

Grief and tiredness make us snap. I get it.
But our loved ones deserve curiosity instead of criticism.

Why Foot Care Matters in Dementia Care

For many people living with dementia, it can be difficult to explain pain or discomfort.
That means a tight shoe, a long toenail, or a small sore can go unnoticed — but can lead to bigger problems.

Regular foot care helps with:
1. Early detection - Spotting cuts, swelling, corns, or circulation issues before they become serious
2. Reducing fall risk - Well-maintained nails and comfortable feet support safer walking and balance
3. Comfort and mobility - Pain-free feet make it easier to stay active and independent at home
4. Preventing infection - Small issues are treated early, reducing the risk of hospital visits

The added benefit of community foot care:
Getting feet done outside the home also provides a reason to get out, social interaction, and a change of scenery. For many, it’s a wellbeing visit as much as it is a health one.

At Bentleys Home Care, our team keeps an eye on foot health during visits and reports any concerns.
We’re also exploring bringing in a professional foot care specialist to support our clients in Dundee.
