Starting my own business three years ago was scary and daunting. It's been an incredible journey so far, and I've met many wonderful clients across small businesses, the public and third sectors, and a fabulous peer network of other founders. All the while, I've had Brand Ambassadog Ollie by my side.

10976663...this number has been with me throughout my career, in fact since before my career even began.

I'm not sure my 19 year old self, who had gone to college with no idea of what she wanted to do with her life but who, in her second year at college, studied 3 'personnel' modules and realised that was it, would make of the career she went on to have. She certainly wouldn't have seen herself, in her late 40s, starting her own business!

I've had the opportunity to work with some truly amazing people and I reached the giddy heights of People Director, which I'm not sure 19 year old Tracey would have believed would happen, but my biggest achievement so far - starting Platinum Blue HR. I can't articulate the absolute joy and fulfilment the last two years have brought.

So, that's the first 30 years done...bring on whatever comes next, I'm ready for it!

I can't quite believe I've been at this for two years! Starting Platinum Blue HR has been the best career decision I've ever made - a rollercoaster ride that I never want to get off!

I've met the most amazing people in the last two years - this community of small business owners that I never knew existed and people who just genuinely want to help each other along the way. So different from the corporate world in too many ways to list.

This morning, armed with a strong coffee, I watched a webinar on the new duty to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace, which came in last October.

It’s clear that the subject continues to be a hot topic, based on the number of calls to ACAS since late last year.

There’s a really useful 8-step guide, produced by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, on what employers can do to prevent sexual harassment at work.

One of the steps is to train all employees (staff and managers) to help them understand what sexual harassment looks like and how to report concerns.

If you’ve been thinking about providing training for your staff, get in touch and I’ll talk you through the training I’m currently providing for my clients. I can provide half or full day training depending on whether its for employees or managers/HR.

I can also help with the other steps, including conducting a sexual harassment risk assessment.

What constitutes sexual harassment?...

Well, apparently not an air kiss.

An Employment Tribunal Judge in London has found that air kisses made by a whisky bar worker’s manager were not sexual in nature. The Judge determined that, even if they had been, it was not reasonable for the claimant to feel the conduct violated her dignity or created an intimidating, hostile, or offensive environment.

We may well see far more employers defending themselves in tribunal, following new legislation that came into force in October 2024. While this particular case was dismissed (for a variety of reasons), others will succeed and highlight practices that should have died out a long time ago.

So, what can you do to protect your employees from sexual harassment? And what are you expected to do? Harassment by third parties falls squarely into this legislation so how do you tackle that?

What’s clear is that the Government mean business with this legislation; employers who turn a blind eye to the subject might be in for a shock.

I’m working with a few clients at the moment who are introducing new policies, training their managers and undertaking a sexual harassment risk assessment to unearth and tackle potential issues.

Ollie and I have been a little quiet recently on our 'socials' - it's been a busy few months here at PBHR HQ but we stopped at the weekend to get in the Christmas spirit...here is Ollie with his advent calendar and also at his gran and grandad's house with his very own advent stockings! (gran places a treat in each stocking and Ollie gets to eat all the days he's missed, which on a Monday means he gets 4 treats!) 🎅
