Not all solar batteries are the same, and the difference usually shows up a year after it’s on the wall, not on the day it goes in.

We’ve put thousands of .uk systems into homes across Scotland and we keep coming back to it for three reasons:

1. You can add more battery later without ripping anything out.
2. It looks like it belongs on a wall rather than something bolted on.
3. And when there’s a problem, which is rare, someone picks up the phone.

That last one matters more than any spec sheet.

We fitted Adam and Amy's system in Cupar at the end of August last year, and when we went back in March we pulled up the numbers to see how it had handled its first Scottish winter.

They'd saved £491 between the end of August and the middle of March. September did the most at £127.80, then it dropped off as the days got shorter, down to £31.70 in December, which is about as dark as it gets up here. But it never stopped earning, and by February it was already climbing back up to £63.30.

What kept it going through winter was the battery. In December the house used 416 units, and only 66 of those came off the roof, while 293 came out of the battery. They charge it overnight on a cheap Octopus rate, then run the house off it through the day instead of paying full price to the grid.

That's 18 panels, a 6kW EcoFlow hybrid inverter and 10kWh of battery on a south-facing roof.

We're after an electrician with a Gold Card, who'll get steady solar, battery and EV work plus a van and kit. We also want an electrician's mate. You don't need experience for that one, just the right attitude and a willingness to learn. And we need a roofer. If you know roofs, we'll show you the solar side.

Solar panels can last for decades, so make sure the roof underneath them is ready to do the same. 🏠☀️

If we find existing damage or a roof that needs attention during a survey, we’ll always recommend getting those repairs sorted before the installation goes ahead.

Why? Because fixing it afterwards could mean removing the solar system just to access the roof - adding unnecessary time and cost that could have been avoided.

It’s another reason why a proper site survey matters.

A satellite image can tell us a lot about your roof, but it can’t tell us everything.

That’s why every installation with AJ Renewables gets a proper site survey before installation day.

Sometimes what looks perfect on a screen simply doesn’t work when you get to the property. Roof conditions, equipment locations, cable routes and even the amount of material required can all change the final design.

Finding that out before installation means our team can arrive knowing exactly what they’re working with, with the right equipment and a system designed around the actual property - not just a satellite image.

Good solar starts long before the panels go on the roof. ☀️

Buying a new-build with solar panels doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting the savings you expected. ☀️

When Mr Blue moved into his property, the panels installed by the developer were covering just under 30% of his energy usage. The problem is that many new-build systems are installed to meet requirements rather than being designed around maximising the homeowner’s energy savings.

We added additional panels around his existing system, alongside a hybrid inverter and battery.

He’s now covering around 79% of his energy usage through solar and battery. 📈🔋
