Remote surveys are fine for getting an initial idea of cost and savings but before you sign on the dotted line for a commercial install, you want someone who's actually been there, walked the building, and planned every cable run in person.

There's no shortcut for that ☀️

Scotland scrapped planning permission for rooftop solar back in May 2024, and from 2027 England is making solar mandatory on all new build homes. The direction of Solar couldn't be clearer.

There is something to think about...

In September, Octopus was charging Robert £95 a month for electricity. By April, Octopus was paying him £28.

Read that again.

We installed Robert's system in Bathgate last September. 14 panels across an east/west roof, 7 kW combined capacity, and over 15 kWh of battery storage. Before solar, his bills were running £95-98 a month. In April, he bought £36 worth of electricity from the grid but sold £64 back. Net result: £28 profit.

The first four months of this year cost Robert £85 total for electricity. The same four months last year cost him £400.

And here's the bit that surprises people. Robert's roof doesn't even face south. It's an east/west split. Most people in Scotland think that wouldn't work for solar. This system is projected to generate over 70% of his annual usage from a roof that "shouldn't" be good enough.

If someone's told you an east/west roof isn't worth it, send them this.

When the team goes out to survey a property, they're prepared for just about anything. Roof condition, shading, consumer units, cable routes. Wolves? That isn't usually on the checklist.

In fairness, if you've got a wolf in the garden, a wee sign would be appreciated 😂

Adam gets it.

After 7 months with his system, the one thing he keeps coming back to is the inverter. Not the panels, not the battery. The inverter.

And he’s spot on. The inverter is the bottleneck for your entire system. You can have as many panels as you like on the roof, but if your inverter can’t handle the output, you’re leaving performance on the table. It’s the ceiling for what your system can do today and what it can grow into tomorrow.

Adam went with a 6 kW inverter because it matched his usage and his generation, but crucially it also gave him headroom. If he ever wants to add more panels or expand his battery, the inverter can handle it without needing to be ripped out and replaced.

Most people obsess over panel brands and battery size. The ones who’ve lived with a system for a few months? They’ll tell you the inverter is the decision that matters most.

This customer didn't think solar would work because their roof faces east and west on slate. They'd been told by someone else it wasn't suitable.

Turns out it's fine. We've put 18 panels across both sides and the generation's strong. Most of Scotland's sunlight is diffuse so direction matters way less than people think, and we fit to slate all the time.
