The Scottish Quality Management Centre (SQMC) began in 1989 as an ancillary unit within the Management Sciences faculties of one of the United Kingdom's leading universities. It's national think-tank roots led to the development of short auditing courses, and SQMC became the first training provider in Scotland to train 'Lead Assessors' with accreditation from the International Register of Certificated Auditors (IRCA). Within four years of its foundation, SQMC was awarded Centre of Excellence status by the Institute of Quality Assurance (IQA) after innovating the nation's first post-graduate degree in Quality Management. Nowadays, the IQA is known as the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI), and SQMC has evolved into an independent, private training supplier to individual students and multinational corporations in 88+ countries. Signing the environmental policy is not enough.

Under ISO 14001:2026 Clause 5, leadership should be visible in the way an organisation sets priorities, provides resources, assigns responsibilities and responds to environmental performance.

Auditors will look beyond written commitments.

They will consider whether environmental objectives influence real business decisions and whether the EMS is genuinely supported from the top.

Leadership sets the direction. Policy states the commitment. Clear roles make it happen.
