Can I squeeze a few more lobsters into my tank? 🦞

It's tempting. Especially when the season is busy and you've got more stock than expected.

But every lobster tank has a maximum capacity for a reason.

Overload it and the mechanical filtration can struggle. Ammonia can rise. pH can fall. The lobsters become stressed and the biological filtration comes under even more pressure.

It can quickly become a vicious circle.

How often should you change the water in your lobster tank?

One of the advantages of a recirculating lobster holding system is that you don't need a constant supply of fresh seawater. But that doesn't mean you can keep using the same water indefinitely.

During our original Lobster Pod trials we found that a water change of around 20% every four to six weeks was sufficient under normal operating conditions.

However every lobster holding operation is different. Stocking levels, water temperature and the quality of your incoming seawater can all affect how often a water change is needed.

Regular water testing is the best way to understand what's happening in your tank and when it's time for some fresh seawater.

Todd Fish Tech has been designing and manufacturing shellfish systems since 1998.

Over the years we've worked with fishermen, seafood businesses, universities, public aquaria and government organisations. We've won awards, patented the Lobster Pod and supplied systems across the UK and beyond.

But what we're proudest of is something much simpler.

Many of our customers have been with us for years and most of our new business comes from repeat orders and recommendations.

We never take that for granted.

"What survival rate should I expect from a lobster tank?"

With healthy lobsters, good water quality and a well-maintained Lobster Pod, survival rates above 99% are entirely achievable.

One of the nicest parts of running a family business is hearing how our customers are getting on years after they've bought one of our systems.

Daniel at The Net Shop in Hastings recently shared his experience after replacing a simple DIY lobster tank with one of our Lobster Pods.

His lobster survival rates increased to over 99%.

He can now hold more shellfish in the same space.

Maintenance takes less time.

Even better, he says the lobsters have time to recover from the stress of transport which has improved the final product for his customers.

Comments like these make all the hard work worthwhile.

Many people have heard of ammonia in a fish tank.

Fewer realise exactly the same thing happens in shellfish holding systems.

Lobsters and crabs naturally produce ammonia as a waste product. The more stressed they are after capture, transport or long periods out of the water, the more ammonia they can release once they're placed into your tank.

That's why biological filtration is so important.

The beneficial bacteria inside a mature biofilter convert harmful ammonia into nitrite and then into the much less harmful nitrate. Regular water changes then help remove the nitrate from the system.

Understanding the nitrogen cycle is one of the keys to maintaining healthy shellfish and achieving excellent survival rates.

Many of our customers know me well but I realised I've never properly introduced myself.

I'm Errin Todd, founder and Sea-E-O of Todd Fish Tech.

I started out as an English and Drama teacher and only planned to help in the family business for a year. That was back in 2002 and somehow I'm still here over twenty years later.

These days I look after customer support, marketing and finance.

My favourite part of the job is helping customers get their shellfish systems set up successfully and guiding them through filter maturation and water quality.

Alongside Todd Fish Tech I volunteer with Citizens Advice and mentor local business owners across Fife.

Helping people has always been the part of work I enjoy most whether that's supporting a shellfish customer, advising someone in the community or helping a business owner solve a challenge.

Did you know our Crab Pod wasn't designed just for crabs?

It's also an excellent system for holding langoustine.

When we designed the tank we included air and water channels in the base to ensure filtered water and oxygen reach every part of the system. Those same channels also provide the perfect support for langoustine tubes, keeping them level and off the tank floor.

For longer-term storage we often recommend moving langoustine out of the tubes and into the trays of our Lobster Pod stacking system, where we've successfully held them for months.
Every species has slightly different requirements and we're always happy to share the practical tips we've learned over nearly 30 years of designing shellfish holding systems.

The Lobster Pod is our best-selling shellfish holding system.

Most people first notice the practical benefits. It takes up less space. Uses less energy. Needs less seawater. It can also hold lobster, crab and langoustine in the same system.

What often surprises us is that many customers end up talking more about the support than the equipment.

Recently a long-term customer told us he was pleased that every promise we made before he bought his first Lobster Pod had turned out to be true. From helping him get started to being available when he needs advice he felt supported every step of the way.

When his chiller failed during the recent heatwave we had another one on its way to him the very next day.

We've been manufacturing shellfish systems since 1998 and we believe good customer service should continue long after delivery day.
