Many of our customers know me well but I realised I've never properly introduced myself.

I'm Errin Todd, founder and Sea-E-O of Todd Fish Tech.

I started out as an English and Drama teacher and only planned to help in the family business for a year. That was back in 2002 and somehow I'm still here over twenty years later.

These days I look after customer support, marketing and finance.

My favourite part of the job is helping customers get their shellfish systems set up successfully and guiding them through filter maturation and water quality.

Alongside Todd Fish Tech I volunteer with Citizens Advice and mentor local business owners across Fife.

Helping people has always been the part of work I enjoy most whether that's supporting a shellfish customer, advising someone in the community or helping a business owner solve a challenge.

Did you know our Crab Pod wasn't designed just for crabs?

It's also an excellent system for holding langoustine.

When we designed the tank we included air and water channels in the base to ensure filtered water and oxygen reach every part of the system. Those same channels also provide the perfect support for langoustine tubes, keeping them level and off the tank floor.

For longer-term storage we often recommend moving langoustine out of the tubes and into the trays of our Lobster Pod stacking system, where we've successfully held them for months.
Every species has slightly different requirements and we're always happy to share the practical tips we've learned over nearly 30 years of designing shellfish holding systems.

The Lobster Pod is our best-selling shellfish holding system.

Most people first notice the practical benefits. It takes up less space. Uses less energy. Needs less seawater. It can also hold lobster, crab and langoustine in the same system.

What often surprises us is that many customers end up talking more about the support than the equipment.

Recently a long-term customer told us he was pleased that every promise we made before he bought his first Lobster Pod had turned out to be true. From helping him get started to being available when he needs advice he felt supported every step of the way.

When his chiller failed during the recent heatwave we had another one on its way to him the very next day.

We've been manufacturing shellfish systems since 1998 and we believe good customer service should continue long after delivery day.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with shellfish holding systems is assuming the filter works properly from day one.

Biological filtration takes time to mature. The beneficial bacteria inside the moving bed filter need time to establish and multiply before the system can safely process increasing shellfish waste loads. This is why we always encourage customers to plan ahead rather than rush setup during busy lobster season.

One important factor often overlooked is pH. As shellfish and beneficial bacteria consume oxygen they also produce carbon dioxide which gradually lowers the pH of the water. If pH drops too far the beneficial bacteria struggle to grow efficiently and maturation slows down significantly.

This is one reason why shellfish holding is far more than simply putting lobsters into a cold tank. Stable water quality relies on biology, chemistry, filtration and patience all working together.

Sometimes less cleaning creates better filtration.

One of our long-term Lobster Pod customers recently apologised for the algae and growth around his filter area when Keith visited to deliver his annual maintenance kit.

What he saw as “dirt” was actually a really healthy sign that the biological filtration was working well.

After seven years operating two Lobster Pods with a combined 400Kg holding capacity he has become highly skilled at managing water quality, testing routines and water changes. However, before the fishing season started he gave the system a very deep clean and accidentally knocked back some of the beneficial bacteria within the filtration system.

A week later he experienced a few mortalities and gave us a call.
Fortunately this was quickly identified as the system partially going back through the filter maturation phase. The advice was surprisingly simple: slow down, stock gradually and let the beneficial bacteria recover naturally.

It is a really good reminder that biological filtration relies on living bacteria colonies and sometimes over-cleaning can actually create instability within a mature system.

If you are restarting your lobster holding system for the summer season remember to gently support filter maturation rather than rushing the process.
