Fully staffed in a recently extended building, we are well placed to deal with the many important issues affecting sportsmen and women living in and visiting Scotland, thus ensuring their continued enjoyment of a wide variety of sporting opportunities. Scotland’s distinctive legislation was already in place before the re-formation of the Scottish Parliament in 1999. Since then, there have been oth

er changes in both legislation and regulation that differ from the rest of the UK – good examples being the use of lead shot, access, pest control and snaring. BASC Scotland provides advice, training and political representation on all aspects of our sport, including firearms, wildfowling, stalking, game shooting and pest control. BASC Scotland is served by its own Scottish Committee, Gamekeeping and Wildlife Management Committee and Wildfowling Joint Council.

👏 Thanks to Jamie Langan MSP for championing the importance of country sports in the Scottish Parliament.

Jamie Langan MSP was elected recently in May and today, during a 'Summer of Sport' debate, he spoke of the importance of field and country sports for rural communities and the economy.

BASC looks forward to working with him and all MSPs in this new parliamentary session.

Today is World Peatlands Day

Peatlands cover just 12% of the UK but store more carbon than all our forests combined. They’re also vital for waders, wildfowl and the wider upland ecosystem.

Well‑managed moorlands support healthy peat, reduce wildfire risk and create habitat for species such as curlew, golden plover and red grouse.

🚸Pupils from all across the Scottish Borders made their way to Kelso last week for the annual Borders Schools Countryside Day. It's a terrific day with exhibits and stands from every conceivable countryside organisation from bee keepers to red squirrel projects, from soil awareness to hands-on bread making.

🦌As well as antler identification and understanding the reasons for traps, children were taught about the nutritious, low carbon and sustainable nature of wild venison and were able to try for themselves some venison salami and chorizo amongst other wild harvests.

The best question of the day was: "Why is deer meat called venison?" Do you know the answer?

We were delighted that local MSP Rachael Hamilton for Ettrick, Roxburgh & Berwickshire visited our stand in between the school groups.

A new licence for muirburn is being introduced in Scotland after the Scottish Parliament passed a law to regulate the practice in 2024.

The aim of the licence is to help ensure that muirburn is carried out safely and appropriately.

We expect that licences will be required from 15 September 2026 and we’ve published guidance on our website to help guide people through the process.

🐦 Waders Week 2026- 18th to 24th May

Scotland’s wading birds are an essential part of our countryside, but many species are facing serious decline. BASC members are working hard to protect waders and help them thrive.

At BASC Scotland, we’re proud to support practical conservation through the BASC Wildlife Fund (BWF), helping deliver habitat improvement, predator control, monitoring and community-led projects that give waders the best chance to thrive.

Over the years, BWF has also supported fantastic projects such as the Working for Waders initiative, bringing together estates, farmers, gamekeepers, conservationists and volunteers across Scotland to reverse declines in vulnerable wader populations.

Healthy wader populations rely on active land management and collaborative conservation, which many BASC members carry out every day. By working together, we can help secure a future for these iconic birds across Scotland’s uplands, wetlands and farmland.

📢 Rural Cabinet Secretary and Minister appointed today

First Minister John Swinney has chosen his Cabinet today, with Gillian Martin MSP appointed selected for Climate Action & Rural Affairs Cabinet Secretary and Jim Fairlie being appointed Minister for Agriculture, Marine and the Islands.

We look forward to engaging constructively with the new Cabinet Secretary and Minister on the key issues affecting Scotland’s rural communities, including shooting, sustainable land management, biodiversity, conservation, and the contribution to the rural economy.

BASC wrote to the First Minister yesterday, urging him to work with BASC to protect and promote shooting and conservation in Scotland.

📢 BASC Scotland urges First Minister to 'champion shooting and conservation'

In a letter to Mr Swinney, BASC Scotland director Peter Clark urged the First Minister to ‘protect sustainable shooting and conservation’ in order to help Scotland retain its rural communities, protect jobs related to shooting, conservation and country sports tourism and reach its biodiversity and nature targets.

There was also an invitation within the letter for Mr Swinney to join BASC Scotland at its office in his constituency to hear more about the important work of the organisation and its members.

The First Minister represents Perthshire North, a constituency which is home to a significant number of farmers, gamekeepers and land managers.

BASC has written to all 129 MSPs since the election, and has already started lobbying MSPs with key events planned throughout the rest of the year.

💥BASC Scotland – Members’ Open Shoot

Where: County Clays, Dunkeld, PH8 0HX
When: Saturday 13th June, registration from 1200, commencing at 1230.

BASC Scotland is holding its annual members’ open shoot at County Clays, Dunkeld.
This year we have added a team competition to the day’s events.

Team Competition
Teams of 4 people (all participants must be BASC members) will shoot 3x 50 bird team flushes and a 20-bird sporting layout each.
The cost is £420 per team which includes cartridges.
Spaces for teams are limited, to apply please complete the online application form: https://survey.typeform.com/to/LazWdlCO

Open Competition
The shoot consists of 40 targets over 4 stands and costs only £25. Any member can enter as many times as they wish, all cards to count.

Prize categories are:
Men’s High Gun: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Ladies’ High Gun: 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Junior (under 21):1st, 2nd, 3rd

Cartridges will be available to purchase on the day. Participants are welcome to bring their own cartridges but only fibre wads are allowed, maximum of 28g 7½.

There is no need to book for the individual categories, just come along! Last entries by 3pm.
