Last week we kicked off Sept with a couple of cracking workshops - both on networks, but both very different perspectives…

The first was for Business Durham’s fantastic DCI accelerator program - focusing on network strategy we set objectives, identified target markets and explored the right rooms to meet the right people 🎯

The second was for Durham University Venture School during their initial 3.5-week phase or a competitive program for alumni to develop business ideas - here we looked at innovation through conversation, how to leverage networks for market research, idea validation, and the power of reciprocity 💡

Both groups were a lot of fun (for me at us 🤪) and although we explored networks for various purposes, both groups came back to the power of human connection 🔗

Fantastic day at the Tees Valley Business Summit powered by WE ARE UMi 🚀

In the morning Jeni delivered a TEES talk session on strategic networking, asking delegates to consider 3 key questions:

1. Why are you networking? 🤔
2. Who are your complementors? 🩷
3. How diverse is your network? 💎

The answers to these serve a purpose when establishing your network strategy, setting objectives, and finding the right rooms to meet the right people.

Then in the afternoon she facilitated a fun, interactive networking session where delegates shared what they KNOW (areas of expertise and knowledge), then what they NEED (who they’re looking to meet).

This builds on the strength of weak ties - tapping into each others wider networks to solve problems and source new opportunities (the dream!)

It was a great day with loads of fun, interesting and informative conversations in between. Thanks to everyone for all the chats - and merch! 🤩

Cracking day yesterday at the inaugural Get Known Summit from Moja 🩷

It was a pleasure to be invited to share some stories, ideas and strategies for effective networking. We set objectives, explored the ecosystem, and had a little Galileo sing-along 🤪

The atmosphere all day was just amazing - everyone was so excited to learn, share ideas, make connections, it was the kind of day that gives you a massive boost of energy and enthusiasm to go and take on the world!

Loved chatting to loads of lovely people, the speakers were amazing and I took loads of notes with proper practical takeaways which I love.
Huge congratulations to team Moja I can’t wait to see what the 2027 edition brings! 🤩

If you HATE small talk - this one’s for you 🥰

A lot of people struggle with small talks because they find it awkward or a bit dull, but there’s also the people who literally can not stand it.

They wanna go deep - quick! ⚡️

And navigating this desire to dive right into deep conversations at networking events can be difficult - you don’t want to offend anyone or scare them off, but you also don’t wanna chat about the weather for two hours. 🫩

Here’s some top tips for opening the door to deeper conversations that gives other people the option to step through, or not 🚪

Letting people open up at their own pace allows for authentic conversations to occur, where people feel safe and heard - great way to make lasting connections 🔗

Did you know our founder is undertaking her PhD at Durham University Business School researching the interactions between academics and practitioners? 🧐

Deploying Design Science Research methodologies, Jeni has developed a framework to support the interactions between these diverse groups - addressing barriers and building a foundation for collaboration, this artefact has potential to help a lot of people more effectively work together 🔗
