Lithium-ion batteries are commonly present within student accommodation in the form of mobile phones, laptops, tablets, power banks, e-cigarettes (vapes) and similar personal devices. These batteries, when damaged, over-charged, poorly manufactured, or used with incompatible or non-rated charging equipment, present a recognised fire risk due to the potential for thermal runaway, rapid fire development, and the release of dense, toxic smoke.
• Use only manufacturer-approved or suitably rated and tested chargers.
• Avoid the use of damaged, modified, or counterfeit charging equipment.
• Refrain from charging devices unattended or overnight where reasonably practicable.
• Keep charging devices away from combustible materials and soft furnishings.
• Disconnect devices once charging is complete.
