🔧🧺 WATTSY’S DJ DOMESTICS TIP OF THE WEEK! 🧺🔧

🤢 WHY DOES YOUR WASHING MACHINE SMELL LIKE A DEAD BADGER?

Tip #1 — Getting rid of that horrible musty washing-machine smell!

Your washing machine is supposed to make things smell clean and fresh… not like something has crawled into it and died! 😂

That musty pong is usually caused by a delightful cocktail of detergent residue, fabric conditioner, fluff, dirt and bacteria building up inside the machine — especially if you mainly use 30°C washes.

So, before you blame the dog… 🐶😂

🧽 CLEAN THE DOOR SEAL
Pull back the rubber seal and clean inside all the folds. You might be amazed (and slightly horrified) at what lives in there!

🧼 CLEAN THE DETERGENT DRAWER
Give the drawer a good scrub, and don’t forget the bit inside the machine where the drawer sits.

🚿 CLEAN THE PUMP FILTER
You’ll normally find this behind the little flap at the bottom of the machine. Switch the machine off first and have a towel handy — because there’s probably water waiting to escape! 💦😂

🔥 GIVE IT A HOT WASH
Run an empty maintenance wash on the hottest suitable programme, using a washing-machine cleaner according to its instructions, or just good old fashioned Soda Crystals.

🚪 LET IT BREATHE
When you’ve finished your washing, leave the door and detergent drawer slightly open. Let the machine dry out rather than closing it up like a damp cupboard!

💡 WATTSY’S TOP TIP:
If your washing machine spends its entire life doing 30°C washes, give it an occasional hot maintenance wash.

Your washing machine needs a bath too! 🛁😂

⚠️ And please don’t mix different cleaning chemicals together. We want a fresh-smelling washing machine, not a chemistry experiment in the utility room! 🧪💨

Still smells like the bottom of a pond after all that?

A Question Worth Asking 🤔

“THE TUMBLE DRYER BAN 🤔
Are we really making things greener?”

So apparently the answer to reducing energy consumption is to ban conventional condenser tumble dryers and eventually leave consumers with heat-pump models.

I’m all for saving energy, but are we really looking at the whole picture?

Heat-pump dryers require compressors, refrigerant gas, extra fans, sensors and considerably more complex electronics, all of which cost more to manufacture, and often more to repair.

Yet the calculations seem to focus heavily on electricity savings, while giving much less consideration to manufacturing, materials, refrigerants, repairs and disposal.

And that’s before we question the assumed 20-year lifespan. If modern machines actually last nearer 10 years, does the argument still stack up?

After almost 40 years repairing appliances, I can’t help thinking we’re measuring the wrong things.

Maybe we should consider the entire life of an appliance, not just how much electricity it uses while running. 🤔

Just a thought from someone who has to repair the things and keep them out of landfill….😂

🐦 I’VE REPAIRED SOME STRANGE FAULTS OVER THE YEARS… BUT THIS ONE TAKES THE BISCUIT! 😂

📞 “The cooker hood has stopped working. The fan just hums, but the lights are fine.”

No problem — another day, another appliance repair.

I arrive, take a look at this Stoves cooker hood and think, “Probably a seized fan motor.”

But then I discover the REAL problem…

🪺 A BIRD’S NEST! 😂

And not some tiny little collection of twigs either — this was a properly established residence right inside the top of the cooker hood!

The nest had jammed the fan motor solid, so when the customer switched it on, all it could do was sit there humming away.

Basically, the cooker hood had been converted from an extraction system into a luxury bird apartment! 🐦🏠😂

Thankfully, the nest had been abandoned, so I was able to remove the obstruction, free up the fan and get the extraction working again. 🌬️👍

I’ve repaired washing machines containing coins, socks and goodness knows what else…

…but I’ve never had to evict a bird from a cooker hood before! 🤣

☀️ Fridge struggling in this hot weather? Read this before turning it colder!

I’ve had quite a few customers asking whether they should turn their fridge thermostat down during the recent warm weather.

The answer is usually no.

A healthy fridge is designed to maintain the correct temperature (around 3–5°C) whether it’s 15°C or 30°C in your kitchen. Turning the thermostat colder often just makes the compressor work harder, increases electricity use and can even freeze food at the back of the fridge.

If your fridge seems to be struggling, try these tips first:

✅ Keep door opening to a minimum.
✅ Let hot food cool before putting it in the fridge.
✅ Don’t overfill it – cold air needs to circulate.
✅ Make sure there’s space around the back for ventilation.
✅ If you can, clean any dust from the condenser at the rear or underneath.

Why do older fridges often struggle in hot weather?

During a heatwave, the fridge has to remove much more heat than normal. As appliances get older, the refrigeration system naturally becomes less efficient, so problems that aren’t noticeable in cooler weather can suddenly appear. A fridge that’s been “just about coping” all year may seem to fail overnight when temperatures rise.

That doesn’t always mean it’s broken beyond repair – it may simply need servicing, cleaning, or a minor repair.

If you’re unsure whether your fridge is working correctly, I’m always happy to offer advice.
