🥾 What hiking taught me about change:

Every hike reminds me of what it feels like to go through change.

🌿 You set off with energy but the trail soon twists and turns.

🌫 Sometimes the path isn’t clear, and you wonder if you’re still going the right way.

🪵 You hit obstacles – roots, rocks, or steep climbs that slow you down.

But you keep walking because you trust the trail will lead somewhere worthwhile.

Business change is no different. The journey can feel long and uncertain, but when leaders give people markers and a clear sense of direction, the path feels manageable.

💡 This has taught me that change isn’t about smoothing out every step, it’s about helping people see that the trail leads to a better place.

👉 What’s your “hiking moment” in change? Something where the path was tough, but you kept moving because the destination mattered.

🛫 What airports taught me about change
Every airport reminds me of what it feels like to go through change.

💼 You leave behind what’s familiar.
⏳ You deal with queues, delays, and uncertainty.
👉 You don’t control everything.

But you keep going because you believe in the destination. 💪

Business change is no different. The turbulence can feel overwhelming, but when leaders give people a clear destination (the why), the journey feels worth it. 👍

✅ To me, change isn’t about making the process painless it’s about keeping people focused on where they’re heading.

🤔What’s your “airport moment” in change? A moment when things felt chaotic, but you kept going because the destination was clear?

🚧 Why So Many Change Projects Stall (and How to Stop It) 🚧

Have you ever rolled out a new system, process, or a new way of working only to find your team slipping back to the old way? You’re not alone and the cost to SMEs can be huge.

📣 Research shows:
👉 70% of change initiatives fail to achieve their goals
👉 Even the “successful” ones capture only around 67% of the benefits
👉 Only 30% actually sustain improvements over time

For SMEs, that might look like:
• Investing in digital tools that nobody adopts
• Restructuring teams but losing momentum after a few months
• Leaders driving change without visible buy-in from staff
• Change not being embedded into everyday culture

✅ The good news: SMEs can get change right when they:

• Explain the “why” clearly so people see how it helps them, not just the business
• Listen to concerns early instead of pushing through resistance
• Involve the right people so employees feel part of shaping the change
• Show visible leadership support — staff need to see leaders walking the talk
• Celebrate small wins to build momentum and confidence step by step
• Give people the tools and training to actually make the change work
• Embed new habits into daily routines so progress sticks

In short, change stalls when vision and people drift apart. It succeeds when leaders, teams, and systems move forward together.

💡 Think change management is just for big corporations? This is the surprising reason your SME needs it even more.

When we talk about digital transformation, many SME owners think of technology, not people. They believe change management is a luxury reserved for multi-million dollar corporate rollouts. But what if that thinking is a primary reason for failure?

SMEs have a unique disadvantage: every employee wear multiple hats. When a new system is introduced, it doesn't just disrupt one role, it impacts the entire small, interconnected team. The ripple effect is far more significant.

📉 Research from sources like McKinsey and Boston Consulting Group consistently shows that roughly 70% of digital transformation projects fail to meet their objectives. The number one reason? Not the technology, but human resistance and a lack of user adoption.

For SMEs, this isn't just a project setback; it's a direct threat to growth and efficiency. My experience shows that successful digital initiatives are not about the tech, but about preparing your people for the change. It's the difference between a new tool collecting digital dust and one that drives real business value.
