Just because you haven’t experienced something does not mean it doesn’t exist.

Micro aggressions come in many forms; micro-invalidations represent one form.

You know when people complain of discrimination and others respond with things like, “I’ve never seen racist abuse take place” or “homophobia doesn’t exist anymore”.

Yep, these are micro-invalidations.

They undermine a persons own experience and attempt to expose people as being over sensitive.

Beware them. They can cause hurt and pain for those on the receiving end, no matter how well-intended the comments may be.

Have you experienced or witnessed micro-invalidations?

Today is Stress Awareness Day.

According to the Mental Health Foundation, at some point in the last year, 74% of us have felt so stressed that we have felt unable to cope.

Stress is the feeling of being under too much mental or emotional pressure. When you are stressed, your body releases stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol.

Signs of stress could be:

* mood swings
* being withdrawn
* loss of motivation, commitment and confidence
* increased emotional reactions – being more tearful, sensitive or aggressive

Within teams, stress can show up as:

- decreased performance
- more conflict
- higher sickness absence
- increased staff turnover

Today, check in on yourself and those around you.

Notice your stressors if you can and seek out ways to minimise them.

And if in doubt, seek support.

Remember, it’s ok not to be ok

If you are a business leader, team leader or employee in an organisation, know that your words matter.

Cultures are created by small, seemingly harmless acts or words repeated over time. Steadily becoming the norm.

What cultures are you creating in your organisation?🧐

How often do you step out of your comfort zone?🧐

Last week I gave a talk and took along my ukelele with me.

I haven’t been playing it for long so I’m average at best, but there were so many relevant messages for the client I felt compelled to do it.

My customer knew what I would be doing of course (and that it was the first time I was doing it!) and was totally onboard which was great😊

I was SO nervous!!! As speakers, we have visions in our heads of how our talks will go and how the messages will be received, but there’s always that ni**le of ‘what if it all goes wrong!’

And I did it - felt the fear and did it anyway.

Got comfortable with being uncomfortable.

And the feedback has been fantastic. I received a delightful recommendation saying how well my talk was received😊

My point?

In business leadership, in inclusion work and in life generally there are times we need to feel discomfort, yet trust in what we are doing.

When we step into a new zone of (dis)comfort it’s a risk that needs courage and preparation.

The bigger the risk, the better the reward.

And the next step becomes that little bit easier👍🏻

What would be possible for you and your business if you embraced discomfort today?

What’s important about pronouns?

Some people think pronouns are obvious. I’ve heard people say they don’t need to display their pronouns as their gender is obvious (hint: once again let’s repeat, s*x and gender are not the same thing).

Pronouns are important when people use the incorrect ones to describe us aren’t they? We feel upset, disappointed, even angry perhaps. If it’s never happened to you you won’t understand. It’s happened to me and it’s awkward at best.

Whether we acknowledge it or not, our pronouns are an important part of our identity.

And frankly, like with many things in life, you don’t need to agree with everyone in order to respect their opinions, viewpoints and choices.

To foster a culture of inclusion, small steps can be key. Here’s a couple of ways you can do your bit to support those around you:

1, display your pronouns on your social media (LinkedIn have made it really easy)

2, display your pronouns on your virtual meeting name display (Zoom have made this really easy)

3, display your pronouns on your email signature

4, introduce yourself with your pronouns (e.g. I’m Jackie, my pronouns are she/her)

5, encourage others to do the same - but don’t enforce they do. Everyone is on their own journey

6, in a world where you can be anything, be kind. There’s enough sh*t in the world - don’t make more of it

I’ve included an article in the comments if you want to read more.

Today I’m giving a talk with a twist…my ukelele will be joining me!

I’ve not long being learning but there’s too much cross over between it and inclusive leadership that it would be remiss of me not to incorporate it.

Plus, life is too short not to have a little fun at work😀

I guess you could call it my keyNOTE👍🏻

At the end of September I attended the Global Speakers Summit , an event that brings together 17 communities of speaking professionals from across the globe.

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect and reconnect with people as the last time we were together as a global community the pandemic wasn’t known as a pandemic!

Every 2 years a location is chosen - 2020 was Namibia and this year, Dublin.

The speaking community is so incredibly diverse. In the way we share our messages, our thought processes and our identities of course.

But importantly, we are an inclusive community, where everyone is welcome, honoured and supported.

I didn’t speak this year but was captured here doing my last minute stand in bit as charity auctioneer alongside Mike Pagan from

Like a few others, I sadly caught Covid somewhere along the line too (it’s still very much out there folks!😳) but I wouldn’t have missed the event for the world.

Already looking forward to 2024😀

What a strange few weeks we’ve had here in the UK - just some of what’s happened (in no particular order):

The cost of living crisis is ramping up

Our governmental leaders have completely changed

Our monarch passed away

In such changing and unsettling times, for many it is the safety of their workplace that provides some form of normality.

It is therefore critical for and to check in with their team members and be sure everyone is ok👍🏻

It’s that whole piece around asking ‘how are you…really’. In the UK we often joke about ‘fine’ meaning absolutely not fine, and yet in reality we rarely explore further after hearing in it response to the ‘how are you’ question.

Maybe a check in with your team members is something small you can do today

And it could help someone who needs it😊
