Amazing opportunity to learn from one of Scotland's last remaining thatchers! 📢 On the edge of the Atlantic, on Scotland's Western Isles, Neil Nicholson is steadfastly plying his trade as one of Scotland's few remaining thatchers. Neil often works using marram grass, a local material that would have historically covered many more buildings in the area.

Now, one lucky person has the chance to learn this critically endangered skill from Neil himself in North Uist. You could be part of a modest revival in Scotland's thatching skills. You need an interest in conserving historic structures and some practical experience using hand and power tools.

Our Thatching Craft Fellow will work with Neil to learn traditional building skills including Highlands and Islands thatching, thatch maintenance and thatch materials collection.

Do not… I repeat… DO NOT fall for ‘damp proofing’! 🚫

This photo exemplifies one of the many reasons why our surveys - pre-purchase and damp alike - include thermographic analysis. Some rely on visible defects and moisture meters to diagnose damp, but not all damp shows and moisture meters are notorious for giving false readings.

Thermographic analysis, in combination with expertise and in-depth investigation and analysis, can give more accurate diagnosis and cause.
