I am delighted Squaring Circles is exhibiting at the first ever Royal Highland Showcase run by the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland. My grandfather's diary farm backed onto the show ground and the Show has been an important event in my family since 1960, when it moved to its permanent home at Ingliston. My first Show was when I was 5 months old.

My grandfather recently celebrated his 97th birthday. I'm looking forward to visiting him this week and showing him my business profile on the RHASS website. I know he'll be really proud.

And I look forward to being there again in person next year!

What could mediation do for the Scottish economy?

The CEDR (CENTRE FOR EFFECTIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION LIMITED) 9th mediation audit is a must read for solicitors and mediators in Scotland: https://lnkd.in/gAHdayd

Check out the CEDR figures below, showing the immense contribution the mediation field has made to the economy (primarily in England) since 1990.

Mediation is not used nearly enough in Scotland. And when it is used, it is very often so close to a proof (trial) that the cost (monetary and non-monetary) savings are significantly less than what they could otherwise have been.

It is a fact that people, businesses and the economy in Scotland are suffering as a result.

Once the issues in dispute are understood, mediation is usually the best way to resolve the dispute. Mediation has success rates of over 90% (on the mediation day or in the days shortly after the mediation).

And if you fall into that less than 10%, well at least you will know that going to court is your best option, that there really is a good reason for putting yourself, your family, your colleagues, your business and your money through the pain of litigation.

At the end of last year we won the National Mediation Awards Newcomer of the Year Awards 2020.

We have recently been told we need to shout louder about what we have achieved in starting up a business shortly before a global pandemic and winning a UK wide award in our first year of trading.

We couldn't be more proud of the work we do and winning the award - so now we're shouting about it!

What are you most proud of achieving in the last 12 months and how can we help you share your successes?

Those who know me well, know how much I love the Scottish countryside and our rural communities. I spent much of my formative years on my grandfather's small dairy farm. I really understand the contribution rural businesses and communities make to Scotland and our economy.

I am passionate about resolving conflicts, differences and disputes and about the role mediation can play in helping rural Scotland thrive. Conflict is inevitable. How we deal with it has a huge impact on our welfare, businesses, communities and environment.

Mediation and negotiation affords landowners, rural businesses and communities the opportunity to resolve conflict in an efficient, convenient and cost-effective way.

Our mediators and negotiators are experienced in a broad range of conflicts and disputes including access; building defects and construction; community and neighbour; commercial and business; compulsory purchase; director, shareholder and partnership; family business; property, land and agriculture and telecommunications. Our founder, Rachael Bicknell, is also on the Scottish Land Commission mediation panel for the tenant farming sector.

Helping rural Scotland thrive Our vision is to have the true value and contribution of rural land-based businesses recognised and valued both publicly and politically. We do this by championing and supporting rural businesses that provide economic, social and environmental benefit to the countryside...

It was a great honour to be interviewed by Scotland's Young Mediators Group, an organisation which raises awareness, and promotes a greater understanding and use, of mediation as an effective dispute resolution tool. The short interview can be found here:

What is the best way of controlling how a dispute is resolved? Include clear and concise dispute resolution (DR) provisions in your contracts, which can assist with resolving any dispute quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively, and potentially preserve the contractual relationship.
