Giving to our favourite charity or cause is something we do based on many factors. The story, the emotion and the appeal are some of the strongest motivators, but once we decide to give, we then need to choose how to give.

There are two main ways to give: cash or cashless, these two can then be further broken down into the various methods.

Cash giving tends to follow the same principle each time: an item of cash, coin or note, is transferred by hand to a receiving point at a specific location. This has been the mainstay over centuries of giving. It is currently in decline, but still in use.

Cashless giving falls into two main categories, planned or spontaneous giving. In the world of planned giving we have standing order/direct debit, or online/app recurring giving.

Spontaneous is normally facilitated by card or mobile payment.

Of all the above, planned giving is most suited to churches and charities as it enables stronger financial planning, is attractive for match funding and/or showing funders a sustainable financial forecast. More specifically the use of Standing Order (SO) and/or Direct Debit (DD) is the lowest cost option as all the donation is received at the charity.

Digital giving normally attracts a processing, subscription or equipment cost, sometimes all three!

Beyond Giving are strong supporters of planned giving via SO or DD as this maximises the donation, less prone to online fraud, reduces costs and is, we believe, the best route to build mission upon. We have a growing bank of resources to enable you transition more of your supporters to a planned way of giving. Please contact us via the website to find out more, or email [email protected]

The Human vs The City
When we return to the cities, which we surely will, we will have the opportunity to reflect that humans are innately driven by a need to connect. Right now that manifests in a need to connect to nature, but in reality, it is a need to connect with other humans.

If there is one thing that COVID-19 has shown us, amongst many things, is the stark contrast between the human form and the built city. As people are no longer regularly visiting the hustle and bustle of cities each day for work, we have in some ways become isolated. People have been forced to seek....

Is your church interested in welcoming refugees?

Our Welcome Network identifies churches around the UK who are committed to welcoming refugees. This means that as refugees and asylum seekers move around the UK, they can easily find a church to welcome them into the community.

Welcome Churches' vision is for every refugee to be welcomed by a local church. We exist to inspire, equip and empower the UK Church to do this.

Here at Beyond Giving we fully recognise the excellent work you do in communities throughout Scotland, and we are keen to support you in the continuation of this work during these difficult times. Maybe you have started a project in response to Covid-19 that you now believe could be a longer term sustainable project? Maybe you need support with purchasing digital giving technology?

Often the process of assessing eligibility and filling out funding applications and recovery plans can be difficult and time consuming, especially in light of ongoing workloads. At Beyond Giving we can support you in that process. We can support you in developing, refining, improving and delivering a plan that allows you to face the challenges presented by Covid, operate sustainably and continue to have a positive impact in your community.

We can support you in areas such as: adapting your business/organisation model, financial forecasting, developing income streams or fundraising strategies, service design, and more. With our background in faith based structures as well as income generation, we can bring unique value to your project. We can join you on your journey with support for the mission based projects that we know are important to you as Christian organisations.

The first step though is ensuring eligibility for the fund which can be found at the link.

After attendance you may want to take the tailored, specialist advice given by the Adapt and Thrive Programme. It is delivered in partnership by Firstport, Corra Foundation, SCVO, Just Enterprise, Community Enterprise and Social Investment Scotland. .

If you feel that you would welcome support from Beyond Giving, or just require more information, then we can explore the possibility of working with you on an agreed basis. Any consultancy fee would be potentially written into the funding application.
