One of the things I enjoy most about my work is helping people feel confident running their own website. Yes, I build them for people but if they are not going to touch it themselves ever again it's a bit of a wasted opportunity for them! Websites need care and attention over time.

I recently spent a day working one-to-one with a client on their Shopify site, she travelled up from Kent to spend the day with me and it was so lovely! She was getting ready for launch but felt a bit overwhelmed by the technical side of things. Orders, payments, stock, settings… it can feel like a lot when you’re starting out - there's a lot of stuff that you don't even know you don't know!

By the end of the day everything made much more sense and their shop was ready to go live.
This was their feedback afterwards:
“My One-to-One Shopify Training and Website Build was fantastic. I am not technical and this session really helped to improve and significantly develop my understanding of how to build, amend and run my site. It was especially helpful to demonstrate the mechanisms behind ordering, payments and stock control. Helen went out of her way to make sure all my questions were answered and gave me the confidence to get my site up and running in time for my launch.”

Some people want me to build their whole website for them. Others want to do it themselves completely. Shopify in a Day sits somewhere in the middle - I get you set up with the boring back end tech and then we work together to build it whilst you learn how to do it and how to manage it after you have put your site live.

If you’re planning a Shopify launch this year and want someone to guide you through it properly, this can be a brilliant option and spending a day together is fun and that investment in yourself and your business will always pay off.

If you've got any questions about this product or websites at all then just drop me a DM - always happy to chat! You can find out more about the Shopify in a Day here >>> https://www.hrdigitaldesign.com/products/shopify-in-a-day-build-your-online-shop-with-expert-guidance-private-session

Earlier this year I had the pleasure of joining Jewellers Academy for a podcast conversation about something I discuss with my clients a lot: making the move from Etsy to your own website.

It was my first podcast, and I genuinely loved every minute of it. The conversation was honest and practical, covering why so many makers and creatives start on Etsy (because it really is a great place to begin), what starts to feel limiting about it over time, and what actually changes when you build a website of your own.

If you're currently selling on Etsy and have been wondering whether your own website is worth it, this episode is for you. We talked through the fears around making the move, why you don't have to abandon Etsy to do it, and what having your own digital home actually gives you in terms of brand control, customer experience and long-term growth.

Etsy can absolutely be part of your business ecosystem. It just doesn't have to be the whole thing.

The link to listen is in my bio, or you can head straight to the blog post which has everything you need.

This is really important to me. As much as I love all my clients and work with loads of them for years after we've completed a website together I don't want to be logging in to their site to change a photo or remove a sentence or add a new product in every time something small needs doing...

There’s no point having a website that looks great if you feel like you can’t go near it afterwards.

Both Shopify and Squarespace are designed to be user-friendly, and part of my job is making sure you feel confident using your site once it’s live. That might be updating text, adding products, uploading images, or making small changes as your business evolves.

You don’t need to become an expert, but you should feel comfortable enough to keep things moving without feeling stuck and I'll help you do that...

Good website product pages answer questions before they’re asked. Clear descriptions, delivery info and imagery build trust quickly and convert better than pages that leave customers guessing.

Quick website tip - can your visitors work out what you do or sell in the blink of an eye? If not, then take five minutes to revisit your homepage and make sure it speaks to people immediately about what you do / what you want them to do next.

Save the fancy language for another page or part of your website...

Quiet periods are ideal for website prep. Updating pages, checking SEO and improving structure now makes busy seasons far less stressful. Start creating those new collections for the winter season now - if you're an online shop have your 'gifts under £20' collection ready to go. Add your product tags if you've been cutting corners, tweak some things and polish it up a bit - your future self will thank you!

You’ve launched your website; it looks great and feels like a proper reflection of your business…Woohooo!!

Then comes the next question:
“How do I actually get people to find it?”

I get asked this all the time, and it’s not because it’s complicated; it’s because there are so many different things you could be doing that it’s hard to know where to start, and this is where overwhelm starts to creep in!

Don't worry - you don’t need to do everything, you don't need to do it all the time, and you don't need to do it everywhere! You just need a simple, consistent approach that builds over time.

I’ve put together a guide covering the key things that actually make a difference, from SEO basics and keywords through to blogging, Google Business Profile, social media, and email.
If you’ve been feeling a bit stuck on this, it should help you get some clarity.

If someone has to think too hard about where to click next, you’ve lost them. Clear navigation is one of the most valuable website upgrades you can make. Think about your customer journey, what you want them to do next and make sure there's a clear way to do it!!!

I do get asked this a lot, and there isn’t really a one-size-fits-all answer.

Shopify is brilliant for online shops. It’s built for selling, managing products, handling orders, and scaling as you grow.

Squarespace works really well for service-based businesses or simpler setups where you want something clean, professional, and easy to manage.

The decision usually comes down to what you’re selling, how you’re selling it, and what you might want to do in the future.

If you’re not sure, that’s something I help you figure out early on. It’s a much easier decision when you look at it in the context of your business rather than trying to compare platforms in isolation. I usually know straight away what's going to work best so save yourself the stress of working it out and just ask me instead! 🙂

SEO starts with structure.
Clear navigation, sensible page layouts and well-used headings make your website easier to understand for both Google and for real people.
When a site is organised properly, SEO becomes much easier to support.
So, my advice is keep it simple, get a good website structure in place and the rest will follow...
