Paris at the start of April, London 23rd April and Edinburgh end of May……if you are training for these, or any other run in the coming months, you may be feeling the effects of a rigorous training plan.

You don’t need to be injured to seek physiotherapy support - you may be needing advice or maintenance/recovery therapy to ensure you get to the start line in an optimal condition.

I enjoy being part of your training process - if you feel you can’t quite shift a recurring ni**le or you struggle to recover in time for your next run, give me a call/text or book online - all details on website

Happy Friday everyone!

I’ve seen a few youth players in January complaining of Achilles or heel pain.

Typically in the pre-pubescent years, an overuse injury like traction apophysitis occurs due to a mismatch between longitudinal bone growth and soft tissue growth. Add to that an increase or acute spike in training volume, and sub-optimal preparation and recovery and voila, you’ve got yourself some heel pain.

This is most common following periods of relative rest (Christmas holidays) and usually brought on by returning to training with gusto (I’ve missed this, I want to play, who cares about a warm up!) 😂

If your child is complaining of a gradual onset of heel symptoms which could potentially impact on his or her ability to participate fully in training, get in touch.

A few quick and relatively interesting tests (particularly if they are competitive types!) will give good information to formulate a solid action plan - and likely keep them doing the sport they love.

You may not be injured.

However, you might find you are not moving as well as you would like, or not achieving your fitness goals in the time expected, or maybe feeling the effects of being a little more sedentary over Christmas.

Sometimes physiotherapy can involve assessing and manual therapy and exercise…..but sometimes a good chat and sharing knowledge on the topic can be just as beneficial, and after one session you may feel better equipped with resources and self management strategies.

If you’d like help to improve how you move and feel with activity, or you’d just like to better understand how you are feeling physically, please get in touch. You might wish you’d done it sooner!

I have had several people enquire about frequent cramps and asking why they happen.

One was training for a half marathon and yet had cramps out with hours of activity, usually at night. Others would cramp when asked to perform an exercise not familiar to them or required a decent amount of effort e.g single leg bridge, or even just with passive stretching.

Cramps appear to be multifactorial in nature and dependent on the individual. This infographic by Yann Le Meur is a great insight and if you suffer from cramps, you may be able to relate to some factors.

If you fall into the pain or prior injury camp, sleep deprivation, novel exercise or unacclimatised to environment, I can help.

I’ve had a few enquiries about back pain in the past few weeks so thought it would be helpful to bust some myths!

I have many people believing back pain can come from poor posture or a weak core - often people try to correct this themselves and tend to sit very rigid for prolonged periods which can increase muscle tension and exacerbate symptoms. This is like clenching your fist when you have wrist pain, according to Professor Peter O’Sullivan, physiotherapist and back pain guru.

If you have any questions about your back pain, or would like assessed to see what is contributing to your symptoms please get in touch

Have you ever had a pain that is persistent and you keep poking it just to check whether it’s still there?

Have you ever had an injury and lots of (well meaning!) people keep asking you how your injury is?

Have you ever felt frustrated at what you can’t do, and therefore stop focussing on what you can?

Chronic or persistent pain involves hypersensitive pain signals in the brain and lower tissue tolerance to stimuli.

When someone notices you are still on crutches or says ‘you not back to football yet?’ this can enhance firing of neurons that are protective and can stimulate reminder feelings about your injury.

Just ask ‘how are you?’ instead.

And if you are the injured one try ‘I’m getting there, I’m on the road to recovery’

Research suggests avoiding hyper vigilance with pain monitoring (repetitive poking!) and trying to change your language and thoughts around pain from negative to positive can be hugely beneficial for recovery - this may prevent your internal neural connections from getting carried away and avoids prolonged sensitivity.

An interesting watch to help understand pain better is Professor Lorimer Moseley’s Ted Talk about his snakebite - I challenge you not find something surprising within this talk! I direct my patients to watch this all the time
