1912 marked the end of Peploe’s two-year stay in Paris and his return to Edinburgh, where he established a new studio at 34 Queen Street. His time in the French capital proved revelatory; in a letter to his wife dated April 1911, he wrote that ‘Paris has changed my brain and made me more definite’. Paris undeniably transformed Peploe’s art, allowing him to remain closely attuned to the avant-garde while undergoing a radical stylistic shift and forging a new creative direction.
 Painted circa 1912–15, Daffodils in a Glass Bowl is the product of intensive experimentation that reveals Peploe’s knowledge of the Fauves, Van Gogh and Cézanne. These influences are clearly evident in the present work: the flattened pictorial space, simplified forms, bold colour, emphasis on design and distinctive hatching technique are all characteristic of this period. Set against a woodblock-print backdrop, the composition also conveys a strong sense of Japonisme, recalling the ukiyo-e prints that so captivated Van Gogh, as well as Whistler, an important point of reference for Peploe and his fellow Scottish artists.
 Peploe’s contemporary still-life paintings often depict tulips, prized for their visually arresting arabesques, but he was known to work with whatever flowers were in season. Likely purchased from a flower stall on Princes Street, the bright yellow daffodil heads here are thrown into sharp relief against the dark blue background.

Kellie Castle, which sits just inland from the East Neuk’s cliffs and beaches, was already five hundred years old when, in 1878, law professor James Allan Lorimer leased it as a summer retreat. Stone towers and crow-stepped gables create a fairytale feel from the outside. The ruined building and almost derelict garden turned out to be a huge influence on the lives of all the family.

The decades of neglect had in fact protected the garden from modernisation, so what they found under the layers of brambles and nettles was a traditional Scottish ‘pleasaunce’, an enclosed garden attached to a castle designed to enchant the senses.

The Arts and Crafts garden at Kellie Castle was designed by Robert Lorimer in 1880, for his parents. It has gravel and grass paths, box-edged beds, herbaceous borders and old roses. Kellie’s garden has outstanding value as a work of art, it is an early example of Sir Robert Lorimer’s work and contains several features designed by other members of the family, particularly his son, the sculptor Hew Lorimer.

In the present work, John Henry Lorimer transports the viewer to a spot within the garden, showcasing both the castle’s intricate architecture and the abundant blossom in early Spring.

The Outlander Auction Preview | Edinburgh | 26th – 31st of May.

As the eighth and final season of the critically acclaimed hit television series Outlander airs, Bonhams presents an exclusive auction of original props and costumes from the landmark production.

Showcasing incredible craftmanship and attention to detail, items from the award-winning franchise will be offered in a live auction on 5 August at Bonhams New Bond Street, and an online auction running from 20 July to 6 August.

A preview exhibition of selected highlights will be free to view at Bonhams Edinburgh between 26 and 31 May followed by a special exhibition of all lots being offered for sale at Bonhams London, New Bond Street between 20 July and 4 August.

Based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling books, Outlander follows Claire Fraser (Caitríona Balfe), a former World War II nurse who travels through a mysterious stone circle to 18th-century Scotland, where she falls in love with Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

By the mid-1920s, Peploe was at the height of both his artistic powers and his reputation. Still Life with Roses, Apples and Oranges ranks among the most sophisticated and exquisite works of this period. In a contemporary article, The Studio examined Peploe’s work and observed that, rather than resting on his past achievements, he continued to demonstrate a sustained creative vitality: ‘not merely visionary, but of the kind which leads to life in creative work; as it is in that only joy is to be found’ (The Studio, London, vol. 87, 1924, p. 64).

According to Peploe’s niece, the artist would often spend painstaking weeks arranging still life compositions in his studio, repeatedly substituting objects and reassessing their placement until the harmony of colour and balance of composition precisely met his intentions. Each morning he would enter the studio and view the assembled still life afresh, making subtle adjustments — adding, removing, or repositioning elements — until satisfied. Every detail was considered: the contours of the tablecloth, the tonal qualities of the fruit, and the angles of the flowers arranged in a favoured vase. Only once he was certain the desired effect had been achieved would he begin to paint. Peploe’s contribution to the still life genre is widely regarded as unrivalled within the history of twentieth-century British art. As with all his finest paintings, this composition represents a masterclass in harmony and balance.
