Artists for Firefly is a unique fundraising exhibition, featuring specially commissioned works by leading contemporary artists, created in support of Firefly International and their ongoing work to help children affected by war globally. Established by artist, Nick Goss and hosted at Bonhams Edinburgh, in collaboration with Artwise Curators, Artists for Firefly features new works on paper by 21 artists, including Michael Armitage, Rana Begum, Sedrick Chisom, Andrew Cranston, Laura Ford, Nick Goss and Caroline Walker.

Reflecting the vital work of Firefly, the participating artists have created work on the theme of childhood, with 100% of the proceeds raised from each sale going directly to support children in Firefly’s partners in Syria, Gaza, Cairo and Bosnia.

Firefly International is a Scottish charity supporting children and young people affected by war. Founded in 1995 by Ellie Maxwell, the charity began with a single youth project in post-war Mostar, Bosnia, and has since grown to support children through education and the arts in Bosnia, Syria, Palestine and Egypt, all delivered by exceptional local partner organisations. Today, Firefly runs the only inter-ethnic youth club and pre-school in Brčko, Bosnia and Herzegovina, alongside trauma-informed education in Syria, art therapy for Palestinian child refugees in Egypt, and mental health support for children in Palestine.

Lot 115 – NAPOLEONIC WARS – DR LOUIS-VIVANT LAGNEAU
Collection relating to Dr Louis-Vivant Lagneau (1781–1867), military surgeon in Napoleon’s army, comprising manuscript material, medals and portrait miniatures.

Dr Louis-Vivant Lagneau (1781-1867) of Chalon-sur-Saône, had embarked on a promising career in medicine in Paris when he was conscripted into Napoleon’s army in 1803, and he went on to serve in various regiments. He travelled widely throughout Europe and took part in over twenty campaigns, including in the Peninsular, and many battles including Talavera. In March 1815 he was promoted to surgeon-major of the 3rd regiment of foot grenadiers of the Old Guard and was present at Waterloo.

His account of the Napoleonic campaigns, Journal d’un chirgugien de la Grande Armée, was published in 1913. In it he describes his military career in great detail and, notably, his presence at Quatre Bras and Waterloo, where he blames the French defeat on the failure of Marshal Grouchy to delay the Prussians: ‘...We were forced, towards evening, to retreat, which did not take place without disorder. The emperor, behind whom I was ten paces away... had his attention fixed for a moment on this point where he expected to see Marshal Grouchy arrive... The Emperor counted heavily on him, for he frequently looked at his watch...’.

The Graeme Collection: Property with Jacobite Associations

By repute this lot was made for the new Inchbrakie House built 1733-39. Inchbrakie Castle was burned by Oliver Cromwell’s army in 1651 and suffered further damage by the Duke of Argyll after the Battle of Sheriffmuir.

Patrick Graeme 7th of Inchbrakie (1670-1740) married Janet Pearson of Kippenross (1677-1745) in 1691, the Arms & Motto being a combination of the two families.

1912 marked the end of Peploe’s two-year stay in Paris and his return to Edinburgh, where he established a new studio at 34 Queen Street. His time in the French capital proved revelatory; in a letter to his wife dated April 1911, he wrote that ‘Paris has changed my brain and made me more definite’. Paris undeniably transformed Peploe’s art, allowing him to remain closely attuned to the avant-garde while undergoing a radical stylistic shift and forging a new creative direction.
 Painted circa 1912–15, Daffodils in a Glass Bowl is the product of intensive experimentation that reveals Peploe’s knowledge of the Fauves, Van Gogh and Cézanne. These influences are clearly evident in the present work: the flattened pictorial space, simplified forms, bold colour, emphasis on design and distinctive hatching technique are all characteristic of this period. Set against a woodblock-print backdrop, the composition also conveys a strong sense of Japonisme, recalling the ukiyo-e prints that so captivated Van Gogh, as well as Whistler, an important point of reference for Peploe and his fellow Scottish artists.
 Peploe’s contemporary still-life paintings often depict tulips, prized for their visually arresting arabesques, but he was known to work with whatever flowers were in season. Likely purchased from a flower stall on Princes Street, the bright yellow daffodil heads here are thrown into sharp relief against the dark blue background.

Kellie Castle, which sits just inland from the East Neuk’s cliffs and beaches, was already five hundred years old when, in 1878, law professor James Allan Lorimer leased it as a summer retreat. Stone towers and crow-stepped gables create a fairytale feel from the outside. The ruined building and almost derelict garden turned out to be a huge influence on the lives of all the family.

The decades of neglect had in fact protected the garden from modernisation, so what they found under the layers of brambles and nettles was a traditional Scottish ‘pleasaunce’, an enclosed garden attached to a castle designed to enchant the senses.

The Arts and Crafts garden at Kellie Castle was designed by Robert Lorimer in 1880, for his parents. It has gravel and grass paths, box-edged beds, herbaceous borders and old roses. Kellie’s garden has outstanding value as a work of art, it is an early example of Sir Robert Lorimer’s work and contains several features designed by other members of the family, particularly his son, the sculptor Hew Lorimer.

In the present work, John Henry Lorimer transports the viewer to a spot within the garden, showcasing both the castle’s intricate architecture and the abundant blossom in early Spring.
