๐Ÿ Ever noticed a cloud of bees flying in circles outside a wall, tree cavity, or roof space?

These are European Tree Bees (Bombus hypnorum), and what youโ€™re seeing is perfectly natural behaviour. The males gather outside the nest entrance and fly in looping patterns while waiting for newly emerged queens to leave the nest so they can mate.

Although it can look alarming, these bees are generally non-aggressive and are simply carrying out an important part of their life cycle.

The good news? โณ This activity is temporary. The colony will naturally decline shortly, with workers and males dying off as the season progresses. Only the newly mated queens survive the winter, finding sheltered spots to hibernate before starting new nests next spring.

At Barricade Pest Control, we do not treat bees. Bees are vital pollinators and an important part of our ecosystem. In most cases, the best course of action is to leave them alone, give them space, and let nature take its course. ๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿ

๐Ÿš Introducing... Only Vans ๐Ÿ˜

A running joke in the office for years has been that we should start an โ€œOnly Vansโ€ account.

Not because our vans are particularly exciting (although they do get around ๐Ÿ˜…), but because they seem to have a special talent for emptying our bank account every time they visit the garage.

Whether itโ€™s a mysterious warning light, a sensor nobody has ever heard of, or a repair bill that costs more than a weekend away, our vans always find new and creative ways to keep us on our toes.

For most businesses, vans are an asset.

For us, theyโ€™re more of a subscription service we never signed up for.

So welcome to Only Vans:๐Ÿ’ท Exclusive content from our maintenance budget.๐Ÿ”ง Premium breakdowns.๐Ÿš Behind-the-scenes footage of us questioning our life choices every time a mechanic calls.

Who else runs a fleet and feels personally victimised by repair bills? ๐Ÿ˜‚

Rat Investigation in Action ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ”

Every successful rat treatment starts with a thorough investigation.

In these images, we identified several key indicators of rat activity:
โœ”๏ธ Uncapped drain showing smear marks from regular rodent movement
โœ”๏ธ Active burrowing beneath the shed structure
โœ”๏ธ Drain chamber inspection to assess potential access routes
โœ”๏ธ Visible egress point where rats were exiting through defects in the chamber wall

Rather than simply placing bait, our process focuses on finding the source of the infestation. We inspect drainage systems, identify entry and exit points, track movement patterns, and locate harbourage areas before implementing a targeted treatment and proofing plan.

By understanding how rats are gaining access, we can recommend effective long-term solutions that address the cause of the problemโ€”not just the symptoms.

๐Ÿญ๐Ÿ‘ถ A surprise discovery during a recent inspection!

This nest of baby house mice was found tucked away inside a rubbish bag that had been stored in a cupboard. Mice are experts at finding warm, quiet, undisturbed places to raise their young, and stored bags, boxes, and clutter can provide the perfect nesting site.

Regularly checking rarely used storage areas can help spot signs of rodent activity before a small problem becomes a much bigger one.

๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๏ธ Every wasp nest has to start somewhere!

This video shows a very early-stage wasp nest, with just three worker wasps helping to build and expand the colony. At this stage, the nest is still small, but over the coming weeks it can grow rapidly as more workers emerge and take over nest-building duties.

A fascinating glimpse into the beginning of what could eventually become a nest containing thousands of wasps later in the season.

Wax moths (sometimes called bee moths) are a common pest of bee colonies. While the adult moths donโ€™t harm bees directly, itโ€™s their larvae that cause the real damage.

Once inside a nest, wax moth larvae feed on beeswax, pollen, honey, and debris within the colony. As they tunnel through the comb, they leave behind silky webbing that can destroy the structure of the nest and make it unsuitable for the bees.

Strong, healthy bee colonies can usually defend themselves against wax moths, but weak or abandoned nests are particularly vulnerable and can be completely overrun.

Itโ€™s also worth noting that finding wax moths entering your home can sometimes be a sign that there is a bee nest nearby or within the structure. The moths are often attracted to bee nests as a place to lay their eggs, so their presence may indicate hidden bee activity. Nature is full of fascinating interactions, and wax moths play an important role in breaking down old and abandoned nests. However, for active bee colonies, they can be a serious problem.

๐Ÿ This is a Tree Bee nest! ๐Ÿ

Unlike wasps, Tree Bees donโ€™t build the familiar grey paper nests that many people recognise. Instead, they create small waxy cells, often hidden away inside bird boxes, loft insulation, wall cavities, or other sheltered spaces.

Because the nest itself is usually concealed, Tree Bee activity can easily go unnoticed until you spot bees regularly flying to and from the same location.

๐Ÿ‘€ Keep an eye out for our next post, where weโ€™ll cover the tell-tale signs that Tree Bees may have made a home in your attic. BarricadePestControl ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒฟ
