✨ Auction Highlight ✨

A remarkable Group of Six Sultanate Illustrations to the Iskandarnama (North India, Sultanate, circa 1500) achieved £70,760 in our Islamic & Indian Art auction on 10 June 2026.

These vibrant paintings, commissioned by the early Delhi Sultans, bring to life the legendary adventures of Alexander the Great (Iskandar), from encounters with fantastical hybrid beings and creatures of the Eastern seas to scenes of courtly audiences and journeys across swirling oceans.

Distinguished by their bold brick-red palette, expressive black outlines, and dynamic storytelling, these rare folios offer a fascinating glimpse into the artistic and cultural world of Sultanate India, where Persian literary traditions met the visual language of the Indian subcontinent.

A wonderful result for an exceptional survivor from a manuscript created over 500 years ago.

A remarkable collection of rare manuscripts, letters and literary archives assembled by the distinguished scholar, critic and wartime intelligence officer Frank Laurence Lucas (1894–1967) will be feature in our next auction of Books & Manuscripts on 16 June 2026.

Coming to market by direct family descent and never previously offered for sale, the collection provides an extraordinary window into the intellectual, literary and political life of twentieth-century Britain.

Known to contemporaries simply as F. L. Lucas, and to friends as “Peter”, Lucas was one of the leading public intellectuals of his generation. Elected to a fellowship at King's College, Cambridge, in the early 1920s, he began his career as a classical scholar before becoming one of Britain's most influential literary critics and scholars.

How did female patronage shape medieval book production?

Produced for the canonesses of Sainte-Waudru in Mons, a community of women noted as leading patrons of book production in the medieval period, this richly illuminated 15th-century breviary combines lavish gold decoration with a rare Life of the community's patron saint, St Waltrude.

The collegiate of Sainte-Waudru was founded in the mid-7th century by a Frankish noblewoman (English, Waltrude; Latin, Waldetrudis), and by the 12th century had become a chapter of secular canonesses. The canonesses were drawn exclusively from the nobility and were not subject to vows of poverty. The chapter was therefore unusually wealthy and its surviving records show that great expense was lavished on the commissioning of devotional manuscripts. A recent study of the chapter’s accounts has identified some 250 liturgical books of various genres, of which apparently only a few are now extant, one of which being a 13th-century lectionary now at the British Library MS Egerton 2569.

In addition to Waltrude, this manuscript exhibits a devotion to her various family members, also saints, many of whom were associated with the abbey of Maubeuge, a few miles south of Mons:

‘Aldegund and Waldetrude were sisters born in the reign of Dagobert I between 628 and 639 … They were ultimately settled in monasteries in the northern frontiers of Christian Frankland under the influence of Saint Amand. They are the best documented of a family of saints that includes their father and mother, Waldetrude’s husband, Vincent of Soignies, and her daughters Madelberta and Aldetrude. Aldetrude … succeeded Aldegund as abbess of Maubeuge from 684 to 696’ (McNamara et http://al., pp. 235-6)

We are deeply saddened by the passing of David Hockney, whose impact on British and international art was profound and far-reaching.

A multifaceted artist whose remarkable career spanned more than six decades, Hockney was one of the most influential British artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Renowned for his work across painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and stage design, he continually challenged artistic conventions while embracing new technologies and creative possibilities.

For many, David Hockney's name immediately evokes the sunshine-soaked, boldly coloured scenes of California homes and swimming pools that became synonymous with his work. After spending his formative years in Yorkshire, Hockney was captivated by the vibrant light, colour and luxury of Los Angeles. Private swimming pools, a rarity in Britain, became an enduring subject through which he explored movement, reflection, space and perspective. Works such as 'A Bigger Splash' (1967) remain among the most iconic images of modern art.

Throughout his career, Hockney's curiosity and innovation never waned. From traditional printmaking to photography and later digital works created on the iPad, he continually embraced new ways of seeing and making art.

David Hockney leaves behind an extraordinary artistic legacy that has inspired generations of artists, collectors and admirers around the world.

Iznik, Damascus, Ottoman & Qajar are all names synonymous with the production of exquisite ceramic tiles. Apart from their original context, individual tiles are prized for their beauty and extraordinary craftsmanship.

Originally created to add colour to external facades the use of tiles grew from discrete segments to elaborate designs covering entire exteriors and interiors of mosques, shrines, palaces and houses across the Middle East. Just like clothes on a person, tiles cloth buildings reflecting light and surroundings and projecting the unique culture of the Islamic world.

Totalling £1.84 million, with 91% of lots sold, our June 2026 Scottish Paintings & Sculpture auction celebrated two significant milestones: our shared bicentenary with the Royal Scottish Academy as well as the centenary of the firm’s first sale of works by the Scottish Colourists.

Marking 100 years since Lyon & Turnbull first brought the Scottish Colourists to auction*, the sale featured a dedicated section of works by these pioneering artists, whose influence continues to define 20th century Scottish art. The anniversary collection attracted strong competition from collectors, with F. C. B. Cadell’s Interior: The Lady in Black leading the sale at £189,200, closely followed by S. J. Peploe’s The White Dress at £164,000 and Cadell’s Jean Cadell Among Trees at £145,100. J. D. Fergusson’s vibrant Edinburgh scene Busy Day, Princes Street achieved £53,120, while G. L. Hunter’s richly coloured still life Grapes, Lemons and Pomegranates in a Silver Dish with Wine Glasses and a Loaf of Bread realised £66,980.

The auction also formed part of the Royal Scottish Academy’s nationwide Celebrating Together project, commemorating the shared bicentenary of both institutions and highlighting two hundred years of artistic achievement in Scotland.

Among the other standout results were George Henry’s atmospheric By the Lake, which achieved £45,560; Anne Redpath’s Marsh Marigolds in a White Jug, from the collection of the late actor Roger Lloyd Pack, at £38,000; Robert Gemmell Hutchison’s charming Paddling at £20,320 and Jack Vettriano’s Pincer Movement at £38,000.

More than a century ago, Fergusson captured 'Busy Day, Princes Street', recording a scene whose bustle and vitality remain instantly recognisable today.

An exceptional example of the intimate scenes that the Scottish Colourist John Duncan Fergusson painted of Edinburgh’s main thoroughfare in the early 1900s.

Born in Leith, near Edinburgh, Fergusson rejected the conservative training available at the Trustees’ Academy in the Scottish capital and was essentially self-taught apart from sporadic attendances at the Académies Colarossi and Julian in Paris. Fergusson exhibited his work for the first time in 1897, in the Royal Scottish Academy’s Annual Exhibition and by 1902 was established in his first studio, at 16 Picardy Place.

As Alice Strang has explained: ‘During this period he was a familiar figure in Princes Street Gardens where he painted swiftly and spontaneously in the French plein-air manner, on small panels.’ (Alice Strang et al, J. D. Fergusson, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh, 2013, p.15) This work, on a panel measuring 9 by 6 inches, is unusually large and ambitious compared to Fergusson’s more usual supports of the time of 5 by 4 inches. A cigar box that he converted to a portable paint box, with cut down brushes and the lid doubling as his palette, could fit into his coat pocket. This gave him the freedom to work outdoors and to record scenes as and when they caught his eye.

In this instance, the bustle of city life is captured at the junction of Princes Street, Waterloo Place and Leith Street. The scene is recognisable today, with General Register House on the left, which is the repository for the National Records of Scotland, whilst the distinctive façade of 1 Waterloo Place, designed by Archibald Elliot and built in 1819, is on the right. Fergusson’s dashing, thickly-laden brushstrokes convey the energy of an elegant capital city and its citizens. Examples of his Princes Street paintings are held in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland and Culture Perth and Kinross.
