Bridges, a castle and a mallard!

It’s another busy week for the Ellendale Team who’ve been providing ecological advice and undertaking ecological surveys on behalf of our clients.

We’re fortunate to work on some fantastic sites and this week was no different with visits to a castle in the Scottish Borders, historic railway bridges as well as surveying in support of renewables projects and housing developments.

Now all we need is the weather to pick up!

Christian Monaco Joins the Ellendale Team!

This week we welcome Christian Monaco to the Ellendale Team who has joined as an Assistant Ecologist. After completing his MSc in applied conservation science from Glasgow University, Christian has experience on ecology surveying and conservation techniques, including Phase 1 habitat surveys and protected species surveying as well as handling and tagging protected species from his previous employment working as an Animal Rescue officer for the Scottish SPCA.

Christian also has field experience from his time as a volunteer Assistant Ranger with the National Trust for Scotland, where he was involved in camera trapping, translocations, habitat monitoring and invasive species control.

Joining the ecology team at the start of the surveys season means Christian has been out and about helping with ecology surveys and assisting with ECoW visits to construction site.

We look forward to working with Christian and sharing his progress within the Ellendale ecology team!

Below the streets of Glasgow!

This has to go down as one of the most unique places we’ve ever surveyed for bats below the streets of Glasgow in the old railway tunnels.

The Glasgow Central Railway (GCR) is a historic underground line built between 1890 and 1896 to connect Maryhill to the River Clyde docks, with key sections running in tunnels under the city centre and West End. The line was largely abandoned by 1964, though parts now operate as the modern Argyll line.

Last night we surveyed for bats at the former Botanic Gardens station ahead of works to secure the structure. This one will definitely be remembered as one of the most interesting places we’ve ever get to go with ecology surveys!

The continued adventures of an Ellendale mug!

Not to be outdone by the recent travels of other mugs, this intrepid little Ellendale mug is happy enjoying the views through the Rocky Mountains in Canada travelling by train from Jasper to Vancouver.

We assume this mug is taking the opportunity to sample all things Canadian like maple syrup liqueur!

Community Bat Walk

Before the bat survey season gets too crazy our Edinburgh-based team undertook a bat walk with The Friends of The Pentlands, an environmental charity focused on the whole area covered by the Pentland Hills, who’s motto is “conserving, protecting and enhancing”.

Our team were on hand to talk the 18 people who came for the walk through bat calls, some of the equipment we use for bat surveys, including endoscopes and thermal cameras, and what bats they were seeing during the evening.

It’s fair to say the Pipistrelles put on a great display for us and it was a very enjoyable evening all round!

Protected species surveys are underway!

This week our team have been on site in the Isle of Skye, Annan, Inverness-shire, Perthshire and Coventry providing ECoW and surveying for protected species and habitats.

This week we’ve completed ECoW checks of substations, cable routes and surveyed for reptiles, bats and amphibians including GCN as well as taking eDNA samples.

With close to 100 bottle/funnel traps spread over ponds this week, GCN still seem to be evading us (god news for our clients), but there are other ponds to survey!

What a week!

With the survey season underway our team have been searching high and low for protected species this week undertaking surveys for our clients to support their projects and developments.

This week we’ve competed Preliminary Roost Assessments (PRA), installing mitigation for bats, surveys for beavers and otters, undertaking Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA), providing Ecological Clerk of Works on construction sites and undertaking protected species surveys including breeding bird surveys.

It’s been a cracking week for the ecology team with lots to see and the sites have been spread from Inverness to the south-west of England.

The busy seasons starts!

With the ecology survey season now ramping up, our team have been out undertaking surveys for flora and fauna as well as setting up long-term monitoring on projects.

Reptile refugia, static bat detectors and trail cameras are out to monitor wildlife and our team have been undertaking early newt surveys, breeding bird surveys and providing ECoW on construction projects.

Despite the cold start to the week the weather picked up with some warm days and nights wondering across various sites!
