Sunset over Monte Fitz Roy, Patagonia.

This 11000 foot high mountain is considered one of the most challenging ascents on Earth and was named after Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy, by the Argentine explorer Francisco Moreno, in the late 1800s.

Robert FitzRoy charted large areas of the previously undocumented Patagonian coast and is probably best known for establishing what we now call the Met Office, in 1854.

The mountain lies in the South Patagonian Ice Field, on the border between Chile and Argentina.

I'm pleased to announce that on the 1st of June, Frances Lincoln Publishers will be releasing Spirit of Place in a new, compact, A5 size hardback format.

I spent a lot of time travelling throughout the Highlands and Island of Scotland, photographing nearly 40 distilleries for inclusion in this book.

Signed copies will be for sale very soon!

I first saw this elderly woman from a distance, from the bottom of a long, narrow, cobbled street in a residential area of Trinidad.

She smiled as she stood in the window, watching me drag myself up the road through the searing afternoon heat.

Her next door neighbour stood talking to her whilst she nodded inattentively. I approached and asked her for a photograph.

The man eagerly agreed, grinning as he stood up straight and waited for the click of the shutter. The old woman, realising her neighbour's mistake, turned and muttered something offensive, before leaning out to give him a strong and encouraging shove back to his own house.

The man quickly shuffled away and the woman turned to me, laughing. It was clear who ran the show in that neighbourhood!

It's true that every image has its story and I couldn't have posted the final image without posting the two images preceding it.

More images will be posted to this page very soon. Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Guanacos

As of 2006, there were thought to be just below a million of these intriguing camel-like creatures in existence. Before South America's colonisation by Europeans, this figure stood at well over 30 million.

Native to the mountainous regions of Chile, Bolivia and Peru, guanacos stand between 1-1.2 metres tall and can run at up to 35 miles per hour.

Interestingly, their blood is able to carry more oxygen than other mammals, allowing them to survive at altitudes of up to 4500 metres (almost 15000 feet)!

The fascinating Perito Moreno Glacier, located in the Los Glaciares National Park, forms part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, which is the largest temperate ice sheet in the Southern Hemisphere.

Its imposing, 250-foot terminus, spans 3 miles across the Lago Argentino, and once in a while, ancient towers of ice melt and fall majestically into the fresh water below.

Having dreamed of seeing its breathtaking landscapes for long enough, I finally had the opportunity to visit Argentina late last year.

Despite covering an area well over eleven times the size, it has a population equivalent to two thirds the population of the United Kingdom.

Vast areas of the country's southern region, Patagonia, consists of nothing but mountains and nature.

Here's a picture of the sun giving way to the moon, over El Chaltén, in the Los Glaciares National Park.

Some of my most memorable moments from my visit to Cuba, were my short encounters with local people.

Much of my time was spent walking around neighbourhoods on the periphery of the towns and cities I visited.

Speaking to people (in my very limited, perhaps non-existant, Spanish), afforded a short glimpse of how some survive with so very little.

This couple were among the many people I stopped and spoke to in the dusty streets of Trinidad.

Despite being first identified 70 years ago, the Zika virus was unknown to many until the 2015-16 outbreak.

Carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the disease caused great concern, especially in South and Central America. The World Health Organisation has only very recently announced the end of the Zika epidemic.

Cuba, which is known for its advanced healthcare system, was extremely successful in fighting the spread of the virus, through the use of government fumigators and fumigation vehicles.

Every evening, the fog caused by the fumigaton vehicles created an eerie stillness in the busy city streets of Trinidad.
